I have the legacy system. Recently I have been tempted to buy some MTH locomotives as some Amtrak models are not make by Lionel. My question is that if I buy DCS as well, canthey both be connected to the same. Track at the same time. And I can control Lionel by legacyland mth by dcs or they can only be connected one at a time. Also will it be wise to do so or I shall just be satisfied whatever Lionel makes

Legacy and DCS coexist on the same layout and can be used simultaneously as well. They use different signaling systems and frequencies and work together. Many people that post here are running both of them together.
Note that there are layout considerations for wiring DCS and TMCC that differ somewhat, so you may have to make adjustments.

Look in the DCS forum here, lots of those discussions. There's also Berry's book, he discusses the topic at some length.
Your Legacy wiring will not need to change, the DCS wiring is sometimes an entirely different beast. Barry's book would help you with that.
The best thing is wire the two systems separately, but you can use them at the same time . If you want to you can use a MTH cable to tie the two bases together and operate the Lionel train's basic TMCC functions (None of the Legacy functions) with the DCS controller
