Screaming Eagles, worn by Mopac units with turbo chargers.

The Mopac U-Boat fleet incuded 7 U-23-B's on Alco style trucks as the Atlas 2250 rides,(also the only U-23B's's to have Screaming Eagles on the long hood) and 32 U-23-B's riding new Floating Bolster trucks with revised scheme with large numbers on the hood.

The big brutes, the U30C's numbered 34 units, (4 with small T&P sub letters). These were once renumbered briefly in the 1 thru 28 series. which would have been kind of cool if the MTH U30's were in that series!

Pictured below are the Atlas U23B and the MTH U30C's.

The Radiophone is some of the last Bowser Cal Scale detail.  I've been told the Radiophone was installed on  2500 units.

Actually the Trainphone was placed on the first TWO [of five] U25B orders from GE -numbers #2500-2527. SO the bottom line is the Weaver Model u25B's sould get the Cal Scale Trainphone antenna detail while the MTH model that came out a couple of years ago is correct in leaving it off.

[info from this book by Paul K. Withers]

I wish MTH came out with the U25C model. Afterall, they have the trucks [from the e44 model] and the fuel tank [u25b. U30C]

It's neat how someone will pick up on an old post (almost a year now) and resurrect it with fresh photos.

As I mentioned in my first post last year, I had never cared for these engines as my experience was only with the MPC offerings which didn't appeal to me at all. Now with the proliferation of scale releases, the beauty of the prototype comes through!

We've added the Freight Santa Fe U28CG as well as the Southern Legacy model.

Dominic - The base model is an MTH C30-7.  I didn't do much to it outside of fixing the pilots, adding scale couplers and repainting it.  It is currently in my back shop so I can swap out the chassis for a Proto2 one that I picked up last year.  The most obvious differences are the location of the grills on the rear and the location where the long hood gets wider at the front of the radiator.

A few more views during the rebuilding stage:

Yes Matt kick away, now if old Peg found out you bought three locs all of the same road and color, I thinking there may be more then one kick applied., yes Matt Jackson, I knew he well!

wait till the wifey finds out I have three 2500 transfer engines and another E44, there will be blood in Virginie...

More on the rail rusting method that Bill Cantrell asked about. Here's the builder's statement:

"I use Testors Model Master 'Rust' for the track. I brush it on and use a paper towel to immediately wipe off the excess that gets on top of the rail. I paint the outside of one and the inside of the other at the same time. Then I flip the track and repeat the process. After that has dried I go back with flat black and touch up all the ties and other spots that are not supposed to be rust. It's a good project to do while watching TV."

Hope that helps. As a reminder, here's the finished product.

Dan,
I have never been really a Mopac fan or a U boat fan, only because I am a steam nut, but seeing these for the first time makes me want to run out and buy them! Very nice. Like the prototype details, thanks for sharing.
