My dad called me yesterday. He said he got his broadway limited set out. The product number is listed above. He said he was running just locomotive around. Then the motor Locked up. And one of the drivers fell off. He said he can't turn it by hand either.

My concern is some of the gears are missing teeth. I don't know how long he had it going, and before this it hasn't ran in probably 15 years when I had it out.   

So the question is. Since it's MPC era are parts available or should I look for a donor?

Donor all the way.  These locos are readily available on some popular auction sites.  But I doubt the story about how the wheel came off, unless it had been dropped and the wheel was already loose.  In a pinch you could even use the chassis from a plastic-bodied 2-4-2, but since the front drivers weren't tapped on a lot of these, you would have to omit the connecting rod, which somewhat spoils the appearance.

I once heard that it was much harder to pull/press wheels onto these MPC chassis, relative to the postwar four-wheel motors 2034, 250, 249, 1615, etc.  I'm also pretty sure there's more copper in the MPC wheel casting.  Perhaps because there was no magne-traction, and no concern about transferring magnetic flux.  Either way, trying to put it back on yourself without a press and wheel cups will be tough!

You might be right about it being dropped. Little hands ( mine) might have done it when I was a kid, ok. Donor might be the way to go
