Hello,

My Lionel 6466WX tender has a broken roller assembly, the plastic is cracked.

I think the part to replace it is called a TCL-42 Collector Roller Assy. Complete Offset for slide shoe truck.

Is this the right part?

The truck is in good condition.

Does anyone know how to replace this part or is it better to get a new truck?

Are there special tools needed?

Thank you for your time, Ron.

If you have the 6466WX (number in title of this thread) tender with a magnetic coupler, the part #481-6 is needed with rivet #480-19.

If you have the 6646WX (number in your post) tender with coil couplers, the part #TCL-42 is needed with rivet #1214-54.

You need to remove the baseplate from the truck by slightly bending the tabs around the axles that hold it in place. Drill out the old rivet and rivet in the new assembly. A rivet press is usually used, but you may be able to do it with a hammer and punch if you are careful.

It's easier, quicker, & less invasive to just gently spread the bolster and truck sides enough to remove the axles, wheels, and bottom plate all at once. Reverse the procedure to reassemble after repairs. Those baseplate tabs will fatigue and break with repeat bending.

Rob, I agree with you on this one.  I use a small screw driver between the wheel and the side frame of the truck to gently pry the side frame away from the wheel.  After everything is back together, it is sometimes necessary to bend the side frames back toward the center of the truck.  I have done this with needle nose  pliers.  If the axles have end play, the wheels may be out of gauge.  I have had them climb the frog on 022 switches.
