Hey guys is there anything specific to know when changing traction tires on this steam engine?

Last time I attempted to change them on one of my other articulateds, I managed to re attach the running gear back to the drive wheel wrong and it kept jamming-had to send it to the shop.

Thanks for any help on this. Nick

I personally change them when they fail. seems like on older mode they eventually start to deteriorate and fail soon after.    I’m my experience the traction tires seem to fail more to dry rot than abuse.  My vision big boy gets a serious workout through show season.   It’s nothing for it to be attached to 50-100 car train depending on what we’re in the mood for.   I’m still using the original traction tires.   probably going on 5 years and 5-8 shows a year.   Plus playing around at home.   Your 1650 is capable of the same workloads and performance with proper maintenance.   I’ve done a few services on those engines and they are pretty straight forward.   If you had an issue with the side rods then just be a bit more careful.   If you want some extra insurance snap a photo of the rods before you remove the screw to ensure you have a reference when reassembling.  If you don’t have a foam cradle get yourself one.   they make any maintenance with these engines so much easier as the pressure of not damaging something is greatly reduced.   it’s a game changer
