Grease is often used to prevent rust. We have train rail grease that has been in use for over fifty years that will also improve track conduction to the train wheels and pickups. It is known as NO OX ID special A. It will work on the sides of the rails to prevent rust too.

Also helps if you use it on the rail connectors when you assemble your layout.
