Well, it arrived today! Test ran it, after finally giving up on getting the tender shell back on with the 9V battery in the clip (the cap was so thick it would have never come back off. Soooo, just placed the battery in the clip vertically, and made sure no wires were pinched and screwed it back together, and voila'. Then reprogrammed the Locomotive's TMCC I.D # and fired her up!! Runs, smokes, crew talk tower com all perfect as are coupler on rear of tender.

  I did have an issue with it "grinding", so when I went to pick it up gently, sure enough the screw holding the drivers in place was gone. ( it was under the rails). so I lubed both the front and rear set W/ good ole Lionel grease, tightened the screws (thinking of a thin ribbon of loc-Tite) when I officially get it for Christmas.  And that took care of it!



  It's now boxed back up for 12-25-2023...



  I've wanted a Lion master Challenger for (20) years, and the best part is it's the # 672 From The Clinchfield. ( We only live about 45 Minutes from the Kingsport sub of the old C.C&O.100_1154100_1160100_1156100_1157100_1158

I am " Old-School" TMCC, I always thought that the 9V was necessary to get the full R.S effects? ( I have one " completely upgraded" TMCC steamer, that is an 6-18086 N.Y.C Pacific 4-6-2 from 99' so I had always put one in for it.  As for waiting to get it? Well, it's a contented thought just seeing the box in the den, and knowing that although used : it is as described, and performs perfectly.



One thing's for sure, by Thanksgiving, I'll be so hyped up I'll never calm down !!!:-)

My fleet of engines, steam and diesel, are all TMCC/Legacy. I never install a battery in any of the engines. It is my understanding that the battery is only used if you loose power at certain spots on your layout, say a dead track or gap.

I have never had that issue and even run my engines on our club layout without any issues.

So unless one has dead spots on their layout, is a battery really necessary?

If you're strictly command, the only time the battery really comes into use is primarily for steam where the tender loses power over switches and the sound cuts out. There are some steam models that once the sound cuts out momentarily on switches, it won't come back on without a power cycle.  Obviously, a battery helps a bunch for those.

Obviously, if you don't have the problem, you don't need the battery.
