I had a pile of cars to run through the shop for ride height fixes and Kadee conversions. Part of this set of cars was three Lionel PS-1 boxcars. I’ve had these in the past but I had sold most of them off. Lately I managed to pick up a few more here and there and got around to setting them up. I found that they could be dropped about 3/32” if the built-in rocker/bolster thing could be ground down on the frame. I was able to pry off the end stirrups and sand the rockers flat using my bench sander. I had to make an adapter bushing out of styrene tube to take the place of the raised mount on the rocker. Last phone pic is  comparison with an Atlas car after lowering.

Thx guys. Why yes Bob, that is the car I found at York. I don't know why, but it's hard to find C&O boxcars. Been looking a long time for one!

IIRC that C&O car, 6-17296, was uncataloged and only available with the first run of the C&O H7 steamer.

Shucks Norm, another Kaydee coupler thread and another guy more than willing to Dremel tool a Lionel truck rather than use the new plastic "2Railable" truck!  Like how you lowered the boxcar.

Norm,  Great job, thanks for posting this with the detailed photos.   Did my first PS-1 conversion yesterday, but I spent too much time cutting around the cylindrical truck pivot boss.  On subsequent ones, I'll just grind it all off and use the tubular spacer to recreate the wheel truck pivot shoulder.

After taking off the end stirrups, a few kisses to a belt sander removed the bolster rocker thing. I would probably 3D print the replacement boss mount so I could get a better fit if I ever get one of these cars again. The 50’ double door box cars and the mechanical reefers all seem to have this setup from that early 2000s era.
