For me this is the major flaw with the BTO model in that you never really know quite what you are going to get as there is often enough of a material difference between the catalog photo/online image and what is delivered;  whether it be the starkness of the white trim in the Triplex or the cream colored boiler of the Fezziwig Camelback boiler which looked more golden in the catalog.

Be it fantasy or prototypical it matters to deliver what you show as buying decisions are being made based on this information.

As Alabama Joe says the white did not appear to be as stark in the Dave and Ryan video.

Which is the correct presentation, the catalog or the video?

You pay your money and you take your chances I suppose.

Hello

I was checking and I found that Mr Muffins trains has a custom run:

”No art work yet - but preorder if interested - WWII United States Army cab number 1944 with the name “Dwight D. Eisenhower” under the cab window. WWII US army green with dark graphite smoke box. transportation corps logo and “United States Army” written on the tender. Polished side rods & all black wheels.”

I'm leaning towards the 701 or the 5016. I think the 701 looks sharp with the red window frame, the big number on the tender, and the number up on top of the boiler towards the front. I dig that. I would prefer to the get the Erie roadname but that's ok.

When does the preorder window come to a close?

I'm conflicted as it's an inaccurate fantasy model -- but at this point it's clear no one is ever going to make a proper 2-8-8-8-4 Virginian #700, so if you want one, it's this one or one of the old MTH models with the same incorrect trailing truck.  And the wheel slip etc. seems cool, so . . . I still have a few weeks to think it over.  It's a triplex, after all . . .

The white shouldn't be there at all.  I'm not getting in line for a $2,000 locomotive not knowing what I'll get, so I'll skip this one.  I personally think the white looks ugly, I'm stunned it appears on multiple versions.

Now that you mention it, it does seem odd that all the offerings have white sidewalls.  If the Halloween had any sidewall paint I would think it should be dark purple, orange, or better yet blood red!  If not those colors then basic black.

Just plain white in natural or artificial light takes the edge off the sinister look appropriate for a Halloween version IMO.

But for all the other models it looks out of place.  Maybe Lionel should include a couple  black Sharpie pens with each engine.

Then again maybe the graphics department was pressed for time and did all white sidewalls to meet the printing deadline.

Dave has not responded, but customer service thanked me and said they'd pass on my suggestion. With pre-order crunch time coming ~ varies among dealers ~ I sure hope Lionel makes a smart, and the right, decision, to at least make 2 versions (black and blue) without the whitewalls. At this point, however, it's a real shot in the dark that we'll see other versions offered.

Typically they will not deviate from the photos unless the factory does it on accident.

Not to be argumentative but on Ryan/Dave and visa versa shows they have stated that the actual product would not be as represented in the photos; as respects paint, weathering , and numbering.  We can only hope.

How much effort is involved getting rid of the whitewalls?  Cylinders may be another matter altogether.

Well, that begs the question.  If the photos don't represent the product, what does it look like?  Are we to take it for granted that it'll be perfect and meet all our expectations?  Somehow I don't think so!

I've pretty much written off a pre-order, I can't imagine what it'll look like.  Given the track record on paint colors, I'm pretty reluctant to shoot the dice!

I don't have anything to complain about in regards to the engines paint,, the fantasy road names, or Lionel in general,  can i still post here?

I'm going  for the Northern Pacific version. The small Oregon town I live in was a NP town. Going to have it hauling lumber to the mill.  Thought I could have some fun with it, since that's what toys are for.

Sorry, I think you want one of the following forums:

Or...

This thread is about a Lionel Vision Line model that is a SCALE model train.

Which version of the four are you ordering,  IF ANY... Matt H. Shay, #5014, #5015, or #5016? Thanks!

Actually based on the OP this thread is about the Tri-Plex in the Lionel General Topics. Seems to me anyone can voice their opinion on the TPlex here.

For a second I thought I was on the 3 Rail Scale forum getting scolded for someone posting in the wrong section.

My advice is to voice your concerns, Lionel does listen, and then see what happens. Lionel on the other hand needs to respond for those who want to pre-order.

With the multiple dealerships who seem to run custom runs from every catalog, I was surprised not to see any of these general concerns addressed. To my knowledge, only Mr. Muffins has announced a variation, US Army in olive drab green. It's neat looking, and if you like military trains this would be a neat item to have...hauling loads of military supplies during WWI.

Exactly, we are in total agreement about preorder images matching what is actually delivered.  If not, why not, and then why bother as you more or less indicated.  Meeting all our expectations is a tall order, however Lionel is responsible for creating the majority of these expectations through their in print and online catalogs.  That is why the accuracy of these images matter.

My comment about paint shades and weathering was prompted by the Ryan and David Show when they said that the dark shade of  some photos in 2023 Volume 2 were not going to reflect the actual product in terms of weathering (none) or shades of paint (darker).  Their graphics department or some such thing/person had messed up according to them perhaps in the rush to meet the printing deadline.

This every Triplex version has white sidewalls oddity is possibly a variation on that theme of is this the real deal or a graphics error?

If as has been stated elsewhere that Lionel reads some of these posts would it not be an easy task to clarify this question especially in the midst of the preorder period?

Yes or No, it is that simple.

I fully support you purchasing the engine painted the way you want if offered.  In fact I really like the Lionel Lines version or the Rio Grande over the Erie.  Might just order one of the alternatives.  Years ago I couldn't see myself spending high $$$ for a fake paint scheme, but I've evolved over the years and am totally ok with it.

I purchased the Shark Veranda and its one of my favorites!!!

Yes, so far, I have only seen Mr. Muffin come out with a custom run for the Triplex - in olive drab. When I think of olive drab juxtaposed with the postings above that discuss how accurate the colors of the Vision Line Erie Triplex may or may not be, it gives me a chuckle. In military modelling forums, the words "olive drab" have been known to set off spirited disputes of what color that really was. People quote from recollections of their grandfather who actually served in World War II and saw it with their own eyes (it was “kind of a brown color”). Other maintain it was a shade closer to khaki. Other go into stupefying dissertations of wartime paint contract color codes and that the color of a Sherman tank was definitely not the same shade of US Army Air force olive drab that a P-40 would wear. The quest for accurate colors stirs up debates that cross multiple hobbies.

I love scale models that are accurate to the prototype. For me, it’s a chase that leads down my own personal rabbit hole. Do I have any color pictures of the modelling subject in its accurate environment in the time period I want to model? From how many angles do I have photos? How long had the subject been in service? How dirty was it? What time of day was it when the photo was taken? Was it overcast or full sun? How did decades of time and oxidation shift the chemistry of the colors in the negative and the print? If it’s a digitized picture, who did what to the color balance while digitizing it and what is my display screen doing to it? All these questions affect the color one sees. The chances of amassing the amount of reference material necessary to answer all of them is slim to none. These is so much subjectivity here. If you see the colors you like, on your railroad you are right.
