I’m Chris. Just a grown man who likes to play with trains in his basement. Been snoopin around on here for a while now so I’m pretty sure I’m in the right place. Anyways…I’ll try to keep it brief for now. Like many of you, I grew up in a house with trains. My dad has enjoyed the hobby his whole life and is a talented modeler himself.  I on the other hand found other interest throughout much of life and now at 48 I’m about 5 years deep in this crazy obsession. I built a couple simple layouts in the first couple years and explored my taste in the hobby through trial and error. All the while building inspiration from so many great modelers whose work I enjoy on here and other sharing media. Then about two and a half years ago (right in the heat of Covid) we moved into a new house in the ucity part of St. Louis with a basement that I felt was magically built a hundred years ago with just my needs in mind.  Once the ‘responsible’ part of the house was pretty well settled in I went right to work with the intent of making as detailed and story telling of a 3 rail o scale layout as I could in basically a 24x15 space. That was around this time of 2020. So now I’m 2 years into my project. I seem to get pretty good feedback from folks who see it personally and my buddy has put it on his YouTube train channel a couple times with some really nice comments. I think it even snuck on here once maybe twice. I’m a pretty private person by nature and not into social media much at all so this is new and a bit awkward honestly for me. I know there’s different themes for different days but since it’s my first I thought I’d cover a few at once.  So here’s a brief overview.  (I know I said that earlier but) My collection of rolling stock is from most of the makers but leans mostly toward Atlas. All powered units are Lionel or K-Line. Nothin against any of the others just decided to pick one operating system and stick to it. I like simplicity. Almost all are USRA NYC and all pre 1937 as that is the theme of the layout. I do have a small modern collection but maybe we’ll get to that later. The layout is basically 20x12. It has 3 O scale loops with the ability of making 2 of them into a reverse loop and an on30 logging loop on the mountain. It’s all Gargraves Phantom track bent by hand with I believe 29 manual and 2 powered Gargraves switches. I’m not quite a rivet counter but I do try to keep the theme and era as real as possible although plenty of artistic license is at play. Well…here’s a start! Please ask any questions and let me know what ya think. Happy to show and share anything. Any suggestions or criticisms are not only welcome but encouraged. Hope you enjoy and that I wasn’t too windy.

Thanks for l👀kin!

I saw a YouTube video a while back featuring a visit to your layout and was blown away by it. I'm glad you have posted here and look forward to seeing more of your layout as it is really detail rich and deserves some more exposure. I love the overall character of your layout and would love to see a track plan or diagram if you have one, or maybe another view showing the track work in the area shown in the second to bottom image. I remember trying to sort it out from the aforementioned video I saw, but I was having a hard time. Your work is up there with some of the more inspiring I have seen posted here, IMO.

Wow…thanks for the kind words!!! Hope everybody got som RR time today! I got to work on mine pretty much most of the day. I’m lucky to be in a business that allows pretty much all winter off which I spend mostly hibernating in this basement. That’s when I do probably 90% of the layout work. Well today was my first big push of the season! I took progress pics and am planning on posting tonight in the ‘Scenery and Structures’ part of the forum. Check it out! Any tips would be appreciated. Anyways…as to Randy’s inquiry about a track plan…I never really had a formal one. Mostly just a head one. I have attached a photo to help explain. It’s one outside loop and two small inside loops connected by the track highlighted in yellow. Flipping the 4 manual switches sends the train onto the yellow track where the non derailing switches send it on a different fork each time it crosses the bridge making it a reverse loop. The two loops connect through the passenger station but it’s not really practical.  And for Jim…or anybody else whose interested…the YouTube link is Motocraze40 2018. There are two videos. ‘Steam Sunday 7/24/22’ is one and ‘Brand New Lionel Legacy Pacific’ is the other. Check out his other stuff too. He’s a huge collector and posts a lot of great videos.

Thanks again everybody!

@ceckenrodt74 - Like everybody has already said 'Fantastic layout!'

The only suggestion I have (for future Posts) is that any long 'text' be broken into several paragraphs as it makes for an easier read.  Otherwise you may lose some readers (@YellowstoneSpecial).  In addition, particularly if you're going to be providing a step-by-step breakdown of how you built different aspects, it allows easier analysis - by the reader - who may wish to copy your approach in certain instances.

Great job for your first Post and, as has already been said, keep those photos coming!

@Dave_C posted:

Nice Work Chris. Love your approach. Trackwork , scenery, rolling stock and engines all blend together with just the right amount of weathering.

I totally agree. The weathering is perfect. The equipment looks used but not abused. I also really like how you ballasted the track. It looks very realistic. I hope you do some how to posts in the future. Overall a great layout!

Waterfall it is Dave. The water starts on the top of the mountain and comes down through the logging camp. It’s the source of the river and also provides water for the log flume and will provide power for the camp via hydraulic generator. The scenes on and around the water were a lot of fun to create.

Hi there PH1975. Thanks for the suggestion and kind words! After looking at it I see it does kinda run on as they say. I posted on the scenery forum last night and broke it down better.

Thanks for the encouragement everyone! I’ll try to post progress again tonight if I don’t run out of steam.

Wow ... really outstanding modeling, Chris! Some of the best, for sure. Excellent detailing/modifying/weathering of everything. The locomotives, the work train, heavy equipment loads, etc etc etc   Friggn' Bravo!

Wow…thanks guys!!! Glad you enjoy!

Didn’t get a whole done on the layout today. Had errands most afternoon but did get some work in on it. I posted some progress over on the scenery spot.

Most of my work on the RR today was adding a few new shelf’s for some unexpected additions I have coming. I’m really cramin em in now! Even goin into the brick. I have a self imposed rule that I can’t have any more trains than can be seen in the layout room. So far I’ve stuck to it. About to run outta room for more loopholes tho.

Well…better hit the sack. Another day of workin on the railroad awaits. Thanks fer lookin!

Oh wait! I almost forgot.

Happy Tail End Tuesday!!!!!!!!

The loads hanging in the MDT refers are over the top! WOW!

Since you left the ceiling open, you could always start mounting shelves up in the floor joists......

Bravo, sir!!!!! Your layout is a work of art! Your realism is superb. Please post more photos in the future. In addition to admiring your greatly detailed scenes, I have learned much studying your weathering work and gotten a lot of ideas and scenery details from this post, alone.

Don't be a stranger. Keep posting and sharing you layout with us all.

Hi again! Well…another day on the RR has passed. Had company a few hours this evening. A young man by the name of Kyle Faintich. He has a huge layout here in St. Louis in a building previously occupied by the family business. It’s huge! It’s got lots of great details and features! And it is absolutely amazing! Lots of thought and some really nice custom features. He’s got an Instagram profile for it @greatest_stl_oscale_layout check him out. He does open house free to the public every first Sunday I believe.

Thanks RSJ! They’re a lot of fun!!! I’m throwing my latest on here tonight. Just finished thanksgiving evening. I’ll put more on here and there. As for the shelf’s in the rafter…I’ve actually pondered. I’m lucky enough to have an amazing wife who does nothing but support me in my hobbys but that one might cause some head scratchin.

And thank you Randy! What kind words from you and everyone. And if your into weathering I can give ya plenty of it. Pretty much a daily thing here. I actually just started a rack of freight tonight. Here’s all I’ve got so far.

Im doin 5 at once for this lot. I usually try to do several at a time to expedite things. The two reefers are mine. Their gonna be head-end cars for a Big 4/MCRR passenger set that will be featured later. The other three are for a gentleman in the northeast who sends me cars fairly regular. The first thing I do is spray top to bottom, inside and out with a good covering of dull coat and paint any details that need it. I like to add air hoses if they don’t already have…and they always need painted.

Next I usually head to the airbrush/powders/chalks. The real messy stuff! I’m always tryin to mix it up and try new things so it can go anywhere from here. Tonight I did some white chalk on this covered hopper because in my research I saw a couple black ones like that and thought it would show good on the red. On the one reefer and tank car I laid down some base crusty rust. I do this by painting a rust colored acrylic on thick where I want it and tapping a brush loaded with a rust colored weathering powder over it. It looks kinda harsh right now but it will get blended in later. I added a finished example. It’s good to let this dry really well as it reacts funny with the dull coat over it if the paint is still wet for some reason. The other two are goin to get based with the airbrush tomorrow. Probably no rust on them.

Well…I think that’s where I’m quittin for tonight. There’s a bit more layout work from today over in the scenery forum as well.

Once again…thanks for l👀kin!

OUTSTANDING!!!

Your attention to authenticity in weathering, added detail, loads, scenery, etc, have been lauded appropriately by all of the above.  Absolutely amazing!

Your addition of brake hoses and angle cocks smacks of "3 Rail Scale" (3RS) and make me yearn to replace your lobster claw couplers with Kadees.  Have you considered taking the next step?  The process can be somewhat tedious but the change can be truly transformational.

It's great to have you active on the Forum!  I have learned more from this group of luminaries than from any other source and the members are always eager to share their expertise and advice.

Would that be the Midwest Money layout?

Thanks so much Holmes! I have thought about it…and I think they look amazing!!! I would absolutely switch to Kadees but my curves are just too tight. I know this because I have four NKP hoppers my dad gave me that have Lionel style on the end cars and link with Kadees. I do shorten many couplers and lower the cars on their trucks to the limits of my layout however because I’m somewhat fussy about that. I put a comparison pic of a passenger set I just did. I’ll do a post next time I do some.  I do actually have a pretty good pile of them from switching 2 rail cars tho. Part of the reason my friend was over last night was to talk about building a detailed 3 rail modular layout along with another local to take to shows. All kadees on it have been talked about. That should be a fun journey to put on here!

Hi Don! Yes it is the Midwest Money layout. Are you from the area?

As for railroad work today…not much on the layout. The little I did is over on the scenery thread. I did however continue weathering the freight cars. My dad was over today and I used the Hardy salt car to show him the Dremel bit I use to make rod in the wood. Since I started on it I figured I might as well see what happens. Things are still a bit harsh but will settle out in a couple last coats. Should finish em up tomorrow night.

Thanks again everybody!

Wow…thank you so much Putnam!!! And thanks for havin me!

DON THATS AWESOME…we’re practically neighbors! ceckenrodt74@gmail.com if ya ever wanna come hang. I have a side hustle painting signs with my buddy Tuesday nights but besides that I’ll pretty much be in my cave till the spring thaw. Im going over to Kyle’s open house Sunday afternoon. Come say hi! I’ll feature it on here Sunday night. With permission of course. Are you a member of the Lionel Club?

Don’t really have anything to report on here tonight except changing the name. Seems like it’s kinda turned into an actual train detailing post and I didn’t detail any trains today. Stay tuned tho…there is much more to come including locos! I did switch gears on the layout tho. I’m doin a big post on a farm project I need to finish. LOTS OF DETAIL WORK!!!!! And right into it! Everything’s already built. It’s the centerpiece of the layout so I’m gonna try to make it the most impactful. Posting it over on the scenery/structures thread. I’ll try to explain as much as I can as I go.  ‘Phase 3’ Layout Build. Check it out!!! Here’s the first pic!

SO good to have you here Chris, again WELCOME!

I really admire your overall approach to modelling and the attention to detail. Your Gargraves track treatment is among the finest out there. You mention perhaps incorporating Kadees when possible. That should make a huge leap forward towards realism as you expressed in your original post. Hopefully this nice Hudson will be among your first candidates?  What do you double-head it with?  Talk about 'sticking out like a sore thumb'...   LOL!

First off, let me join the chorus of praise for your fantastic work.

FWIW: When I mount Kadees I use the center mounting hole and don't tighten that screw completely; it allows the coupler box to pivot and I've run stuff as tight as 24" radius without any problems. You've probably already thought of this, but I thought I would mention it anyway...

No secrets here texgeekboy! It’s one of the main reasons I started doing this. I don’t claim to be an expert at anything but I have spent many hours of trial and error…with research playing on this iPad in the backdrop for most of them. If you like anything you see and  I can share anything I’ve learned along the way creating it I’m more than happy too share.

So this particular car is Atlas’s Master line. It is as it comes as far as details and almost all in this line are. The nice thing is they sell all the parts on their website. The first pic shows a couple of my ‘freight parts’ boxes. The highlighted are mostly parts directly from their website. Bummer is…I was on there ordering some things couple days ago and the price has tripled to over 3$ each in the last few months. I’m intending to check the other makers to see their price points. K-Line…MTH…Lionel and I believe Weaver all make them and they’re all basically the same.

Except this one however! I got this Atlas coil car awhile back the air hoses are amazing! And their a buck a piece!!! I’m sure I’m a bit late to the party…as my modern collection only started few months ago…but I’m impressed. It was a 2rail that I converted but the hoses flex with the couplers around every curve I have without a hitch. They come in two pieces and I had to modify a bit with a razor knife and detail file for 3 rail. I just painted it to show the amazing detail better. I hope the pics explain. Happy to answer any questions tho.

I actually ordered three to see how they translate to other cars. Maybe I’ll do a post when they come in and also show how I modify both types to fit different style couplers and also how I paint them if you like. I put em on everything!

Hope this was helpful. Check back tomorrow. I might work on some cars tonight.

As always…thanks for lookin!7B462103-9EB9-415A-92EE-7FA717F16D7ABEBDE842-1215-4D6D-89A3-B4F805A702B2B75163A2-4B86-483C-B4ED-245D602CB3D1D042EDF2-139C-493D-8A5E-54FBCBF75044BA5ACF62-1B0A-477D-9A33-D3FD3BE53E03FFBEA666-5758-4AEE-9A75-8F2E2C8238FE
