The next time I came to see him, you guessed it. He would hear nothing less than I was to have that set on my layout, as a gift from him!

Jim, what a great story! It is always sad when such amazingly wonderful people pass away. I've always enjoyed watching videos of the great Misty Mountain. Hopefully his grandsons will carry on the fine family tradition and find a way to keep the layout open for people to visit.
Chuck Griffin was a remarkable person and will be missed in so many ways. I have met so many wonderful people, but he has to be one of the nicest and most generous people I have ever met. I can't put into words how much respect I have for him and what he did for the hobby. Rest in Peace Chuck.

Very sad news to hear for sure. Condolences to Chuck's family and close friends. May they find some level of comfort knowing how many toy train enthusiasts Chuck touched with his dedication to the hobby and obvious labor of love in the Misty Mountain Railroad. What a fabulous legacy! Wish I had a chance to see it in person and meet the man. Sounds like he was one of the best of the best.

It was an honor to have meet him during this past July's LCCA convention.
Very sad to hear. Never met the man, but have heard many good things about him and enjoyed seeing his MMR layout in print as well as in the OGR DVDs. My condolences go out to his family during their time of loss.
Rich, I am sorry to hear about your friend. I didn't know him and only knew about him through the OGR videos. He was a great ambassador for our hobby. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
I took my grandson to see Mr Griffin and the Misty Mountian Railroad last September as I suspected he didn't have much time left in this world. As always, Mr Griffin was generous with his time - and the layout was as wonderful as I remember it a few years back when I first saw it. I took a pic of Mr Griffin (upper right) at the controls of his wonderful layout as we left....we sure will miss him.

I first saw the reference to the Misty Mountain Railroad in OGR Runs 177 and 178. I called Mr. Griffin to make an appointment to visit, and my wife and I made a trip to Georgia to visit the railroad. I was so impressed with the layout that I told my wife that we had to bring our grandsons back to see it. We did that the following year and they were really impressed. Mr. Griffin was a wonderful host and showed us his car collection as well. I am so sorry to hear of his death, but he has left some lasting memories for others far beyond his imagination. My grandsons are much older now but still remember that visit. He truly was a wonderful gentleman.
I had the pleasure of building some structures for Charlie a number of years ago. My condolences to his family and friends.
