Hi S Scale,

I have a quick question.  My son just ordered the Lionel Berkshire.  Being an MTH O gauge guy myself, who uses proto sound, I noticed something different.

When we went to reverse the engine, the sound dropped out as we pressed the direction button to cycle between forward / Neutral / reverse.

Again, this was in conventional mode with a Z-4000 transformer.

Your feedback is appreciated.

Ben

What item number? IIRC many (if not all) Lionel TMCC and Legacy engines require a battery to keep the sound system engaged when operating conventionally. Is this LionChief?

Hi,

They are the brand new: 6-44127 AF Legacy Berkshire.  He opened the tender.  It didn't look like there was a place for a battery in the tender (Full disclosure) when he was in college he did warranty repair at MTH in Columbia.MD.  When we looked inside the tender there was a speaker and soundboard.  Nothing resembling a Nicad, or even a capacitor?.

so I was a little???. Thanks for the feedback.

Since I never run my Legacy locomotives on conventional, I'll take a stab at this and please correct me if I'm wrong. Changing direction in conventional creates a momentary loss of voltage to the loco. Since this is done with minimal or no throttle, perhaps there is not enough voltage for the sounds to trigger until the throttle is opened up? Are you saying that even at speed in reverse the sounds do not return? BTW, I don't think I've seen a battery compartment on a Lionel AF loco since the Mikado and/or Pacifics were produced.

I imagine that they have the RS-LITE boards in the tender so your best solution is GRJ’s YLB (Your Last Battery) and is very simple to install plugs right into any RS-Lite board

Which is why I wondered if it's the same boards.  Obviously this would be an easy solution.
