So, after what felt like years and years and years of waiting. I finally picked up my new MTH K4 with Proto 3. It was well worth the wait!

I had originally canceled my order in Oct when I picked up the Lionel version for a great price. I was very disappointed with the lionel version, tons of problems out of the box. I ended up returning the Lionel and re-ordering the MTH. Turned out to be a good decision. The MTH model looks great. Did a quick back and forth test run and all worked fine. Also, the whistle sound seems to be a huge improvement over past MTH releases. It seems to be louder and fuller sounding, if that makes any sense. Also when sitting idle there are a lot more background sounds that I never noticed on any other MTH Steamers.

I highly recommend picking one up!

Greg,

Did you buy the lionel 6-11264 k4? If so you can provide a good comparison.  That lionel has nice features and I want to know if the newest mth premier k4s have the same features such aspening boiler front, opening cab roof hatch, and hide away front coupler. i am interested in the Tuscan red k4.  Any feedback is appreciated. Thx!

Jerry, I pickerd up the Legacy tuscan K4 at the Lionel open house in NC.  It has the features you mention.  It is a early model of the K4 and the small front coupler doesn't pivot down into the pilot.  It's a great looking and sounding model.  And it has Lionel's whistle smoke/steam.

It's too bad Greg had trouble with his Lionel but if MTH is an operating option all is well.

Jerry,

Yes the Lionel version I had was 6-11264. Both the Lionel and MTH have the opening boiler front, roof hatches and the fold down front coupler.

Out of the box my Lionel version had a grab iron fall off as I un wrapped it, the rear coupler would open under even the lightest load and the smoke unit crapped out after about 45 minutes of running.

I find the MTH version to overall be way more appealing. MTH used a darker shade of green that looks almost black, I like that better and the darkened drivers and drive rods on the MTH look much more realistic. Also, with the MTH wirless drawbar and the deck plate between the loco and tender there is a less noticeable gap between the two. this will look even better when MTH releases the shorter drawbars for proto3.
