Good luck with the project, but a B&O Dreyfuss Hudson made to look like a P7D Pacific?

While not perfectly kosher prototypically speaking is it close enough to give it consideration?  I am not a student of trains, as are others.  It seems that the material differences are on the front end?  To this casual observer the Dreyfus Hudson and the P7D look very similar.

Please elaborate a bit on your concerns/objections.

As the Meme Goes "Shut up and take my money!"  (I know it's not a Pacific, and the B&O did not use Hudson's.) BUT its not like I see anyone else, doing anything close to this and as a B&O lover I am in 100 and 10%!

You are correct! Since I got into the hobby about 10ish years ago. I have not seen a brass B&O steam engine released (From Sunset/3rd Rail). I want some of their back catalog items (this is not a want to buy). But this is Brand new and if someone is going to do a custom run, I want to support it!

The differences are massive. First of all, the model is a Hudson (4-6-4). The P7D was a Pacific (4-6-2). If you aren't looking for a scale model, then go for it. If you are a B&O fan and you want a realistic P7D this is not even close.

If someone out there wants to make this as pacific, I would say great. How many NEW b&o engines come out? If we don't support what is made, why would any seller venture to make other new stuff? I have wanted to see a streamlined B&O engine since I got into this, 10 somethings years ago.  Lets not poo poo it, lets be happy its here! As a B&O collector who cares about scale, I once again say SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

What Jonnyspeed is saying has merit.  This B&O is being offered only because MTH is offering a Dreyfus Hudson.  That and the streamlined front end of the streamlined Hudson VS the Pacific make it plausible.  While not a slave to prototypical anything, I don't like any offering that resembles the Monty Python Parrot sketch.

Definitely having second thoughts on this one.

I'm sorry, but your logic is so very flawed here. You mean you want to encourage companies to do cheap knockoffs instead of proper models? I can paint a brick with the same B&O paint scheme and put some wheels on it, but that doesn't make it a P7D.

Why not say no thank you and put in a request for Lionel to do a P7D since they still invest in new tooling, and they have never done one? Or go find one from 3rd Rail or Weaver on the secondary market? They are out there. A "B&O collector" should care about the model actually being something the B&O had I would think, but what do I know?

Jonnyspeed I take only one issue with your post, at $1,349.95 these are not cheap at least IMO.  

I do not impart any sinister (my words not yours) intent in this offering. IMO it was a an opportunity presented when the Dreyfus was announced.  Pat's Trains evidently decided to come close to the P7D using the Dreyfus Hudson since there were apparently no immediate plans to make a real P7D model by Lionel or anybody else.

To some something close that could pass for a P7D was better than nothing at all.  This reminds me of the Trainworld custom run of Strasburg #90 which was not correct but would do in the absence of the much more expensive Lionel version yet to arrive.  As I recall that Trainworld version sold out.

Obviously the hobby is able to accommodate the collecting parameters that you and Peter express.

For me as a casual train knowledge person once the differences were pointed out I could not unsee them.  But that is just me.
