Just out of curiosity, and since I'm a complete MTH layman, and neophyte...

Is there a significant advantage to be had by upgrading to PS3, instead of PS2?   Is it something as simple as parts availability?  Or perhaps newer, updated sounds and operating qualities were realized with PS3?                           Is PS2 more likely than PS3 to go poof, and release its magic smoke due to age, design, or 3 vs 5 (or vice versa) operating voltages?

I'm seeing quite a few PS1/2 items being exhumed from basement corners, dusted off, and presented at sometimes astronomical asking prices now that "MTH is closing induced mania" is peaking....

actually ps 2 3 volt board have 2 meg sound file in memory capability where as ps 3 boards have 4 meg memory capability so you can have larger sound files to play with if you want to, also ps 2 3 volt boards use a 2.4 volt battery where as ps 3 boards have no battery and have a super cap so there never is a  battery to replace, either way it's up to your personal preference one will work as as good as the other, typically a NiCad battery will last around 7 to 10 years if that matters to you. the super caps for ps 3 boards hardly ever fail but do fail occasionally ! ps 3/2 boards which come in steam kits boards also have the capability of a quittable whistle file can be installed in an older engine as say a ps 1 engine converted to ps 3/2 kit board  !  as far as your question about magic smoke you only have to be concerned if your buying an older ps 2 5 volt board due to there age of over 20 years and put out the magic smoke at any time or fail on any given moment to die! that's why the ps 2 3volt boards came out to replace the dying ps 2 5 volt boards !

So it all boils down to what you prefer!

PS3 also has a DCC capability.  So when you get fed up with the DCS idiosyncrasies that have you do more trouble shooting than train running, you can swap over to DCC fairly easily.

Have Fun!
