This ABA set had zinc rot while in storage for 3 years.  MTH replaced the 3 chassis for me at no charge, and today I put it back together.  The problem is that it only starts up in conventional mode, and only runs in forward direction.  No neutral, no reverse, just forward when power is applied.  Light and sounds work, didn't test smoke.  Using a Z-1000 transformer.

 

My DCS system is new and working well with 2 other PS2 locos that I tested last night.

 

Here is a shot of reassembled engine.  I was very careful and only unhooked wires where needed.  I have all 3 units assembled and tethered.

 

First picture highlights the motor plug, which I unhooked to do the transformer reset.  Still forward only after reset.  Did it twice.

 

Second picture is what I believe is the battery charging port, the replacement chassis doesn't have a place for this (must be for PS3 version).  The battery is new and  fully charged.

 

If you have experienced this please let me know what fixed it for you.

Alan, that is the charging port for the 3-volt PS2 system.

 

There was no need to remove the motor plug to do a conventional reset.  To keep loco from flying, simply push the transformer handle up slowly.  Then press the whistle button once and, at 1/2 second ine=tervals, the bell button 5 timnes.

 

There must be no TIU signal on the tracks to do a conventional reset.  The TIus should not have any power applied to AUX or FIXED 1, or they'll send a watchdog.

Thanks RJR - not sure how I fixed it but all is working now. Could have been a wire on the smoke unit touching ground, not sure.

 

I removed the smoke unit and then it started up in neutral and started cycling directions after that.  I had already added to the DCS remote as it was racing racing around the track with 17volts, so I figured DCS was OK.  I'm using the fixed input right now which why I unplugged it to reset.

 

Put back the smoke unit using two plastic spacers to raise it up, and it's all good right now in conventional and DCS.  Testing the smoke now and so far so good.  I'm happy!

Alan,  Chances are the smoke element is touching the chamber internally.  It should NOT be.  With 4 pin smoke plug removed from circuit board measure the ohms across the resistors.  Should read about 8 ohms.  Then test one side to a screw on the smoke unit.  If 0 ohms you have a ground.  Either stray wire soldered on a the PCB, or the internal resistor pushed against the chamber.  Best to get that fixed. 

 

If you can find a switch hole close to the charge port you can open it up to fit the charge port thru.  Otherwise tape it so the back terminals can't touch any metal.  The engine charges while running, so that would only be needed if the engine sat for several months.  G
