Best bet is to get a PS3/2 replacement board with 5V connectors. It should plug right into the locomotive harness. PS3/2 boards are only available to MTH techs. There are a few on the board who could probably help you out in putting the new board in. Using a full PS3 conversion kit would require removing the existing wiring in the locomotive and replacing it with the wiring and boards in the PS3 kit. This would result in the loss of some lighting control, and also be more involved. In this case replacing the failed boards with PS3/2 boards is the best option.

With you engine and the board in the engine, you do not want to put it in the tender.  You will loose a lot of light functions on the engine.  Additionally with the tender of the model, you wont be a simple as stated to put in tender.

Upgrade to the PS-32 in the engine just takes some additional mechanical related steps knowing how to mount in the engine.  Best approach to fixing your friends model.  Here are some I have done.  G

When switching to a PS32 board, the battery gets taken out for good.....that’s what GGG has me do....I get my PS32 boards from him. All I have to do is mount it properly with new heat sinks, replace the speaker, ditch the battery, and plug it in and go.....all the ones I have done were PS2 5 volt, so maybe that only applies to those models?......Pat

There are also PS32 boards with PS2 3V connectors, in case a PS2 3V board gets fried. They are pretty much the same boards used in the PS3 steam upgrade kit.
