I am trying to unlock a Galloping Goose engine. It is in the idle position and just gives  a 2 clank sound. I therefore assume it is in the reset mode. I am trying to get to go forward and operate. I have followed the guide on how to unlock and also do a code 18. All to no results. I would appreciate any guidance and help... thanks in advanced..Joe

Yeah; what Ron said.

When you first power it up take the throttle up to near the top of the range.  After a few seconds reduce it to less than 10 volts, maybe 8.  At that point it should still be in neutral.

Next I usually push the direction button to get it rolling.  The throttle will work like any conventional locomotive after that, as you move it up and down,  However once you shut it off for more than 15 secs or so you go back to the beginning.

Mort,

Was that a formal document issued by MTH?  (It's hard to tell.)

The reason I mention this is because there a number of the suggestions that are questionable, or have not worked for me with my Proto 1's:

1.) Electronic Circuitry can be Damaged Irreparably -- Not so.  It's the software that gets scrambled.  The hardware will not be damaged simply by powering it up.  It's a pain in the butt to reprogram the software if it gets scrambled but nothing will be irreparably damaged in either hardware or software.

2.) First Charge the Protosound NiCad battery for 18 hours at a transformer setting of 14 volts -- Almost everything else that I've read says 10 hrs max.  No one ever wants to leave an engine unattended and powered up.  If power gets interrupted briefly during that period the locomotive will go into motion.  10 hrs is bad enough.

3.) When starting or reversing the engine, DO NOT EXCEED 10-Volts -- Then why is the maximum output voltage on most MTH transformers 18 VAC, 20 VAC on some, if you can't go over 10?  10 volts only applies with Proto 1 upon initial power up and in the opposite way mentioned.  In my experience you MUST go above 10 to enter 'Reset' correctly, and they will indeed "sit there and do nothing", but if you then drop it down below 10 you can getting underway with normal throttle and direction button usage.

4.) Do NOT use the direction button on the transformer to start, stop or reverse the engine -- The only fully-repeatable way I have to get all of my Proto 1's moving is to use the direction button, once they're at about 8 volts, coming down from 10.  It always works and they're still humming along.  Sometimes the throttle doesn't.  No blown boards in more than 20 years.

How many times have you tried following the guide?  I haven't had this situation in awhile, but my recollection is that the instructions are fairly complicated - easy to mess up - and I had to repeat the process numerous times to get it to work.  Maybe giving it a few more tries will do the trick.

When say use the direction button to get your proto 1s moving o you mean on the remote?

Thanks again Joe.

Joe,

If you're using an old-fashioned transformer, or a newer version of it, the direction button is on the case, near the throttle lever.

If you're using a hand-held throttle connected by a curly cable to something like the above it's probably on the handheld part, near the throttle knob.

Finally, if you have a modern remote hand-held controller, like a Lionel TMCC CAB-1, Legacy CAB-1L, or Legacy CAB-2, or an MTH DCS hand-held controller, the direction button will be on the handheld part.

Remember though that this last approach only works if:

1.) Your corresponding TMCC/Legacy system has a Track Power Controller (TPC), or a modern ZW-C or ZW-L transformer (internal TPC's), connected or linked to it's command base to provide variable power to the track,

    or

2.) Your corresponding MTH TIU is set up to provide variable power through a channel connected to the track.
