Re-gauging wheel sets

Hello Dave,

I am contacting you because I have seen on the OGR forum that you are involved with customers of the American Flyer products. I have just received my order from Charles Ro which included a P.E. Coach #6-48018 and a P.E. Reefer #6-49951. Both of these cars need the wheel sets to be re-gauged, on some of the axle sets the gauge is set wide. I am questioning if it will be safe trying to spread the trucks to remove the axles to re-gauge the wheels or do I need to disassemble the trucks?
