I understand E units but still having difficulty with one that I bought on ebay.  I cannot get the lionel 671 (1946) to reverse.  The question I have is which of the fingers does the reverse.  Is it the four finger or the single yellow wire going on the two finger?  Hopefully someone out there can answer this simple question.  Thanks

The outside two fingers on the four finger board should have black and green wire to them. One outside finger, usual the black wire, goes to central rail power. The other outside finger, the one with the green wire, goes to the field connection. But these wires can be reversed and the e-unit will still operate normally. The two yellow wires, or on later e-units the yellow and blue wires, go to the two brush holders. On a single motor loco it makes no difference which wire goes to which brush holder. On the four finger board, the middle fingers should be one of the yellow wires going to one of the brush holders.  The two finger board should have the second yellow wire attached to it.  That wire goes to the other brush holder.

The function of the e-unit is to connect the black wire to one of the yellow wires and connect the green wire to the other yellow wire. When the e-unit is operated twice, the connections to the yellow wires are reversed.
