Any suggestions/ ideas? A friend has a BN caboose, and wants to remove just a bit of lettering, without damaging the finish.Thanks in advance.

Weaver sells some remover that works very well on most but not all lettering. I've used it on a number of engines shells to change the numbers. It won't hurt the paint if you follow directions. Don

You mean "Weaver" as in the folks who make O scale stuff? After I read your reply (thanks by the way) I went to their website but didn't see any product like that listed.
Did I miss something?

It's on the page with the Scalecoat paints.
Strummer, sorry it's Scalecoat 2 and called "Wash Away". I just used it to take some rubber cement off a plastic window. Works well.

For those who may not know, Weaver Models sells the full line of Scalecoat paint products--some intended for metals and wood (Scalecoat 1 line), some intended for plastics (Scalecoat 2 line), and some made to match colors of earlier and some current tinplate. Many are available in spray form, or bottled, or as marker-type pens for small touch ups.

I always start off with something mild then progress to a more harsh solvent. ELO is probably the safest starting point. Next I move up to Testors thinner then to regular lacquer thinner or acetone. I have been doing quit a bit of renumbering lately and have been just using the harsh stuff. If you are very careful and quick, you can get the lettering off pretty easily without damage to the topcoat.

I hope the graphic removers work on Lionel cars made in the 1990's.
