Restoration of Burlington Flying Yankee Project - Status?

What "Budd Pioneer Zephyr" project? The original Burlington Pioneer Zephyr was completely restored quite some years ago, and then lowered into the underground parking garage at the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry. It is thus completely protected from the weather.

Please excuse the Budd reference, I was going by memory as to builder.  You are right that a Burlington Pioneer Zephyr was restored and placed underground at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.  However there was another project that someone had started who was attempting to restore at least the Cab and the two cars.  They were completely reworking the cab and were placing donors nameplates on seats in at least one car.   It has been awhile since I last heard about their progress, thus this posting.

Thanks for being such a great mind reader!  I know there was something going on regarding bringing this unit back to life, but I couldn't recall all of the particulars.  I'm glad to see that it has moved along significantly since I last read about it a few years back.  

Do you know approximately when they may expect to see it run under its own power?

Except,,,,,,,,,it was NOT a "Burlington" Flying Yankee. The Burlington had the various Zephyrs. You might want to do a search and learn what railroad actually had the Flying Yankee.

Did  they determine that they could return the Winton diesel engine to operation?

Looks like they’re now doing a mere cosmetic restoration... and then placing it on a panel right where it will be showered with road salt six months of the year...

  Maybe they have good intentions and bad planning.  It's a shame to see them work so hard on restoration, just to put the train outside in long New England winters.

I was startled to run across the Flying Yankee sitting alongside US302 in Glen, NH in 1994 while on vacation. The restoration group had made significant progress rehabilitating her thanks to its main benefactor, whose name I cannot recall nor find, as the group website went through an overhaul. Sadly as that gentleman passed away, so did much of the funds.
