I know this is going to be a no brainer for a lot of you,  But I took off the side frame assembly to grease  the gears;  I had just gotten my first PA Set.   I noticed one sliding pick up on each truck.  My friend says there should be a pick up wire on them.  They run fine as is and there is no sign of a wire ever being mounted there.  Can some one tell me what they are for?????

Thank you for the info,   Marty

On Gilbert diesels with pullmore wheels like yours they are additional electrical pickup from each rail. Since they are screwed to each truck, that is how their contribution is made. You will notice that their positioning always coincides with the wheels that are not insulated. I believe early Lionel-made Flyer added the wire as extra insurance that they would operate as intended.
