I have recently purchased the NYC, St. Mary of the Lake StationSounds diner made by Lionel, stock number 2127090. When I received the car from my dealer, I was unable to give the car an ID number, nor did number 1 or 99 work. I sent it to Lionel as they promptly gave me an RA number (fedex shipping label, returned) and they said it worked fine, possibly operator error. I said ok, they returned the car, I still could not assign an ID number. Just for my satisfaction, I turned off the lights, via the switch underneath the car, and then placed the car in Program mode, it worked, number assigned, sounds came on and voices work fine. Then I turned the light switch on, placed the car on the track, No Voices, In a nut shell, with the light switch On, no voices, with the light switch Off, the StationSounds work. So, I called Lionel, told them my findings, they gave me another RA (USPS 2 Day return label) and I spoke with the service technician and he said the car worked fine with the light on, ???? Now it’s here and the same issue exist. Light on, no StationSounds voices, Light off, StationSounds work.  So, I’ve done everything by the manual, I have 9 StationSounds cars that work fine. My Legacy system is 1.70/1.60, up to date.
So, what do you guys suggest. I’m very happy with Lionel, I’ve been one of their customers for 50 plus years. The technician was very friendly, helpful. Please give me some ideas. Thank you for reading about my concerns. Happy Railroading Everyone A6F3FF7F-C638-4EFF-8286-2DFF447B3532

I’m no expert on the electronics in this generation of Station Sounds diners (even if they look simpler than the older versions), but in your position I’d (1) try running it on a separate section of track isolated from the rest of the layout to see if the problem happens again and (2) check your CAB2 settings for whether something is turned off in the diner commands.  If the car works on Lionel’s test track then there must be something specific to your setup that is causing this or the switch itself is faulty. Also, does it operate at all under conventional control?

@Hancock52, thank you for your thoughts, I’m going to take this really nice car to my hobbyshop and have my dealer check out the car, also, I’ll take it to Farmerjohns layout, and to Dr. Jack Fishers layout for review. The problem is Time, it all takes time, a two hour drive, 100 miles to Evansville Indiana (Gas), so, I can operate the car with the lights off, it’s just difficult for me to justify the issue with the TCA tour to my home July 1, and the LCCA tours to my home July 25…. I have a beautiful Hudson pulling a beautiful NYC train and I like to hear the StationSounds diner talking during the run.
Now, you mention putting the car on another block, I have 19, and I have two separate transformers operating the layout. I’m going to take away the Cab 1 base Y connected to my Cab 2 system. I’ll see if that’s the issue. I use a cab 2 remotes and a cab 1L remote operating the layout.
At this time, all engines, all other sound cars, cattle, bunk cars, crane cars, StationSounds diners work properly. So, this NYC St. Mary of the Lake car is a true mystery to me. Thank you for reading.

FWIW, I think that the complex/extensive nature of your layout may be something to do with the light control issue. I think that Lionel test returned products on a simple no frills setup quite unlike a really large layout. The only other thing that occurred to me is, lose the switch - as in wire the lighting to be on whenever there is track power. Switches are cheap products that can easily go wrong.

Come to think of it, there was an issue with some earlier StationSounds diners having to have the lights toggled on via the CAB2, but offhand I can’t think how that might be related to your problem.

Shame because I think that theses diners are among Lionel’s best products.
