i have been selling my 3 rail locos and test everything. My question is the startup sound they make, i put one on the track and i could have swore that my Electrolux vacuum was starting up. Is this a prototypical  sound? Why do they sound like this? If its not prototypical, why do they do this?  Thanks!

What you are hearing, assuming you are referring to steam locomotive models, is the steam driven turbogenerator (Pyle National Dynamotor) spooling up. That sound is from actual field recordings, and is very definitely prototypical.
