I purchased two used Lionel 1225 and 756 engines. i tried to manually move the wheels to no avail. On a good test oval using std transformer I got nothing. I checked the 1225 after taking the shell off and the gears on both motor and drive wheel were good. I could manually move the motor and hence the drive wheel. I have never seen this type of engine so didnt know how to test it. any help would be appreciated.

Are you are talking about the Polar Express LionChief Berkshire no. 1225? Or the scale version?
And what is the no. 756? A scale Berk? Or did you mean the no. 746 postwar J? Your title and text are not consistent.
You are going to need to provide more info and/or photos to get any help here.
If these are can-motored models, the wheels are not supposed to turn freely by hand.
The 1225 wheels won't move by pushing them. The worm gear angle is too flat.
The 746(also a worm drive, but steeper), if that's what it is, should roll its motor with the wheels if it's cleaned, lubed, & not binding anywhere.
Ok. Thanks for help. I figured it out. one of the side rods not positioned properly. Adjusted on the 1225 and everything works fine. Same problem on the 756 but can't get the hex bolt loose to adjust the side rod. Previous owner must have really tightened bolt down as well as improperly adjusting side rod. Anybody know the socket size required as all my sockets too big.
Measure the bolt head across the flats on opposite sides of the head. That will give you the socket size to purchase.
