Great catalog!   Amazing back to HO with magnetic track.   Interesting to see how that plays out.   I would have thought metal handrails and smoke in the HO locos (higher price point of course).   I may have to order a set just to play with.   Looks like Kadee style couplers, noting the brake line uncouplers.

I like the camera cabeese.

Interesting that they came up with a Tier-4 loco (BNSF!) LionChief, but I note the "sturdy stamped metal handrails" that cut though the body near the cab.   Looks like a great price, I will likely pre-order this set even with its train-set quality.   No remote uncoupler on the loco.

Pretty impressive set of choices, and scales.   What, do you think On30 from Lionel with LC and sound will be in the future using the new HO track?   Well, I won't hold my breath.

I placed a pre-order today with TrainWorld for the Tier-4 BNSF set.   I have six LC+ locos, this will be my first LC loco.   I decided to give it a try in order to have a modern LC diesel loco, I hope that I don't regret this decision.   I also have the new LC+ SD-60M which is a great locomotive, and the LC+ Berkshire.   Delivery is not until end of this year (2018), so perhaps into 2019.   BTW I used the AP to set the sounds on my two recent LC+ locos, but generally just run them with my Universal Remote, with 3 trains running on my small 4X12 layout.

As a Wisconsin resident with a Wisconsin themed roster/collection/interest in trains, I will definitely be ordering the Wisconsin Central SD45 with kinematic pilots.

I will also order a Milwaukee Road GP-9 torpedo.  Always a Milwaukee fanatic.

As for rolling stock....

Tank car with freight sounds,

Flag car (UP steam program).  These really look really nice.

This is a really good catalog

Also, I wish they would have made the Santa Fe Super Chief as Lion Chief+ rather than plain Lion Chief.

Likewise they need to make a Lion Chief+ Polar Express.   Fixed voltage track isn't going to cut it for me.

I agree with the Super Chief being LC+.  They have this set listed less than they want for the LC+ engine.  My layout is small enough that a B unit isn't needed.  I'm interested in just the engine...but not at $500+

Yes, I think I’ve already posted about this but will weigh in again.

Really like to see Lionel put out some Lion Chief Plus Sets. The Santa Fe set immediately caught my eye but lost interest when I saw that it was plain vanilla LC.

C’mon Lionel! Let’s see LC+ Sets!

I would think a viable alternative to LC+ sets might be to sell LC+ engines that match the sets. They already will have tooled up the shells, it would seem to be no big deal to make the LC+ insides as well. That way, if you want to upgrade your engine it would be available to you. So, one year after the starter set, the next year offer the upgraded loco.

Or, offer a choice: a lower priced LC set or an upgraded complete LC+ set. I'm hoping we see one of these soon.

That wouldn't work for me.  I want no part of "fixed voltage" setups so I feel that it would be a waste of money to buy a plain LC set in hopes of getting an engine upgrade.  Obviously I'm totally unaware of the cost differential to Lionel, but I would have hoped that all LC material would have been LC+ from the get go; giving all buyer the versatility from the start.

Don't know. Will spend the next month or so figuring out a few things to purchase.  Nice, very diverse catalog.  Happy to see the S gaugers/American Flyer folks got some nice choices, and that LC and LC+ are doing well, as these are by far the most affordable and value priced items in the hobby to my way of thinking.  Almost all the important functionality at a significantly lower price, affordable to many more people than the high end stuff.  Not that the high end stuff is being ignored, mind you.  I'm somewhat amazed that there is still enough market to support any new tooling for high end steamers and diesels at this point in history.

I know they've been around a bit, but I've got the LC+ LL Berkshire coming my way, along with some fast track accessories and some more power to handle some layout expanding I'd like to do. I am running 036 right now so I had to rule out my passenger car wishes, but I am really thirsty for a Cammed Caboose (no pun intended). I am just starting my collection now that I am on my own, so you could say I am very much buying into 'fixed voltage', which I was concerned about at first but Lionel seems very committed to releasing engines on Bluetooth so really there is very little I couldn't run at whatever price point sacrifice say a quilling whistle, which really isn't a major downside for me.

I was happy to see not one but to O36 friendly steamers.  I want a Prairie, but I don't care for any of the roads listed, and I'm kind of done buying roads I don't want just to get the locomotive I do want.  So I think I'll pass on this catalog sadly, unless there is a caboose I want.  That and I need to get my car serviced, and probably buy a new AC unit for my house.  The trains can't keep my house cool when it's 110+ outside.

Excellent choice!

By all accounts, that LC+ Berk is a real winner. Maybe the best LC+ loco produced yet. I know the videos that were posted here (from those who ordered it from the 2017 catalog) were very impressive.

I have the Nickel Plate version and love it!

I was pretty happy to see the new Legacy SD45 paint schemes and was all set to order both of the two New York Susquehanna & Western SD45s until I saw they have the exact same cab numbers that MTH offered their NYS&W Railking Scale SD45 powered and dummy units back in 2003.  Since I already have those I'll be passing on the new ones.  Seriously, the NYS&W had like a dozen of these SD45's and Lionel couldn't use different cab numbers than what was already in the marketplace?  They lost what would have been at least one definite sale here.

My Lionel Lines Berkshire arrived today, gave it a 1 hour workout pulling 6 cars on a 054 layout.  Beautiful engine, a real smoker. I like the fact I can turn off the sound switch and the horn bell still sing out.  On the Bluetooth app you can change the sound pitch oh the horn & bell. I did that on my KATY Mikado.

I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else so I'll ask it here.

On page 14 of the catalog, H10 steam locomotive 6-84949 is listed as Pennsylvania #8093 but what is depicted is Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines #6072.  A PRSL freight locomotive would be a logical complement to the new PRSL N5 cabin car (6-85300 on page 40), not to mention that there are already three other PRR H10's on pages 14-15; four if you include the H10 that comes with the set on pages 12-13.

So which is it, PRR #8093 or PRSL #6072?

Rats, I can't get the catalog to load again. It probably will in a few days.

Can anyone tell me about the tank cars with sounds? I looked over this whole post and gather that there's a couple of sets of them? individual cars?

This is my favorite Lionel product and I am interested!

Gary

Thanks for the direct link!

When I click it, the load goes about 2/3s over and stalls. The last time I tried I left the room for awhile and it still never loaded.

After letting it soak in, I'm committed to the H10 Coal Set, B&O GP9 and maybe the Rutland Boxcar. I do want a Rutland boxcar but can't decide if I want the scale version or the Postwar (or both....)

I REALLY like the "what if" Century Limited Niagra but I already have 1 engine that requires 0-54 coming soon and don't want a collection of them sitting in boxes.

Sound tank cars?  What do they sound like, chemicals splashing around in the tank?  Wow, I think I need to stop by a club and check this crazy stuff out.  I won't be buying any, but I have to say it does sound interesting.  I went retro and I guess it wouldn't actually be correct to say I never looked back because when I look at a prewar train that's what I am doing, looking back.  Cheers.

Glad you like it! I ordered mine Tuesday, and I think a power add on I got is holding up the whole order, I really hope to get my hands on it soon! Whats your opinion on how to smoke the unit out of the box, I see a lot of videos on priming the smoke unit but the consensus still at least seems to be less is more...??? I think my favorite bluetooth related feature is the momentum setting, I think most people enjoy simulating this by hand, but I can't tell you how many people not 100% familiar with trains grab a controller and instinctually crank the knob. That being said, in this regard I feel like the App could become limitless... After listening to one of Dave's videos he posted in here about running a Legacy unit off the bluetooth I am surprised why they feel they can't get all the sounds features to work via the app. The quilling whistle would be very easy to engage with the "pitch modifier" instead of just hitting the horn/whistle button(not mentioning just adding the slider separate in that same panel... like why not). Sure maybe you sacrifice customizing the whistle to your preference, but you gain the feature as it works with peoples Legacy remotes...

When i first saw these, i thought... Yes!!! Lionel finally listened.  But then I heard these are NOT gonna be a re-run of the VisionLine cars from years ago.  Instead they'll be like the PS-1 boxcars with FreightSounds a couple of years ago.  And those weren't that great.  If this is true, I'll pass on these.  I guess we'll see what actually gets produced and go from there.  The catalog shows about 6 individual tankers with sounds -- all available separately.  No 3-packs or sets.  They match other 30K tankers produced recently.
