Hi Alex, I'm sorry to read about your father. I went through the same thing with my Mom so I know how demanding it can be on people when ever we have to go through a transition like this.

As for the new house and improved layout that is a good thing and I wish you all the best with both.

Alex, sorry to hear about your Dad. I hope your move to NJ goes smoothly. Good luck with the layout. Will you try to moved what you have already built or start all over again?

Alan G. the toll to Staten Island is up to $15 now. (Although I think there is a discount for EZPass) I just went to Brooklyn last weekend.

Alex,

Aging and failing parents are a huge challenge, as you already know.  Thank God you're in a position to make the move and step up to the task at hand.  Having moved more times than I care to remember, two moves to and two moves from Staten Island plus three moves while on Staten Island in addition to many others elsewhere, I dread the thought of your having to go through that ordeal, again, too.

The larger house and presumably more elbow room are small compensation for what you're taking on.  More importantly, you will always have the sure and certain knowledge that you and your family did all you could for your folks.

Thinking primarily in railroad terms, as I'm sure many others here do, I'm anxious to know which railroad(s) you're graduating to?  CNJ?  RDG?  PRR?  LV?  RR?  The mighty SIRT and the neighborhood of "Skunk's Misery" will surely miss you and your lovely ladies!

Best wishes for the road ahead!

Alex, have your number and been wanting to call you but am doing the same packing up here as we are moving from Howell to Jackson at the end of June. I've lived in this area for close to 35 years now and know the area very well. All the back roads, best restaurants, etc. Very, very good italian market real close to you. One of my old Nabisco customer. Hope you get "chummy" with your new neighbors. Should be interesting telling your neighbors that you are a member of the NJ Hirailers.

Talk soon. If you need a good attorney, I have one in Freehold that is doing my sale and purchase. Real good person.

Enjoy the holiday weekend.

Alex,

How much do you think you can move and reuse in the new place?

Hi Rich ,

With the price of lumber these days, I'm going to use as much as possible. I'm numbering the plywood boards and trying to take all of them, as for the 2x4s I'll take the one's that aren't warped. Hoping more than half are good. I will take the entire control panel just the way it is, I'll pull back all the wire from under the layout and roll it up right next to the control panel. When it comes time to rebuild I'll just unroll the wires and trace them out.

Thanks, Alex

Alex,

Good luck with your move, sorry about your father, lost my mother a few years back to this nasty disease.  My heart goes out to you and your family, at least you will have a nice place to construct your layout.  Be careful moving your family!

Definitely post pictures as you build your new layout!

PCRR/Dave

Thank you Dave,

Yes this is a nasty disease, and it's sad to watch. But the good thing is he'll be with us now and i can keep a close eye on him. Also on a good note I get to build a new layout

Thanks, Alex

Hi Alex,

It does not seem that long ago that the Jada Railroad was in OGR Run 276! There was a special page in the article about the layout you got for your dad, which I have added to this post.  Your mom and dad are fortunate to have you as a son and Dina as a daughter-in-law.

I feel fortunate to have met you and Dina at a York, and know a little bit about what you are going through, so please accept my best wishes and prayers as well.

Yours truly,  Dave B

Alex,

Sorry to hear about the diagnosis involving your dad. I enjoyed speaking with him a few years ago at one of your parties and recall he was into trains.

I too moved to New Jersey from New York 7 years ago and now live in Whippany (near Morristown), just south or the interchange of routes 80 and 287. You will have  some good local OGR guys near you in Freehold including Stu Rankin (NotLionel LLC on the forum), Bob Taylor, NCJ Joe and Ted Bertiger. I'm also only 45 minutes away.

Good luck with the move.

Hi Alex, sorry to hear of your dad's dementia, Carl's a lovely man. My dad, now 93, also has dementia and we have recently had to put him in a nursing home. It's a sad way for a loved one to finish their life. Let's hope he has some good years left. Good luck with the move.

Hi Dave, Thank you for your kind words. This disease is really tough to watch it came on without notice, once we move into the new house I'm going to keep his mind busy with trains. I'll have him with me while i repair and upgrade, he loves to watch.

Thanks, Alex

ALEX M  the idea of keeping your dad with you while repairing and upgrading is good you want to keep his mind active.

my sister has dementia and she loves to play bejeweled game on computer and says it keeps her mind active and makes her feel normal.

your right about this dementia creeping up, I wish you and family all the best as time moves on.

have you looked online for topics on this and most importantly the things not to do as we discovered we were doing a lot incorrectly with my sister.

good luck on the move
