I just received, from a forum member, Lionel GG1 2332 from a 31777 - PRR GG-1 Passenger Set #2124w

It's missing a traction tire on one wheel.  It runs a little lopsided due to that. I have searched here and on the web for a video on how to mount a tire  There isn't one for this particular GG1.  I cannot locate any screws, anywhere, to remove the side-frame. I Can't even see how to detach the truck!

I have seen the videos, here, using paperclips and dental tools, but I just can't see enough room to work with.

Also -  I have 5 other GG1s (scale & non-scale) including another shorty Lionel Tuscan Red #4881 which runs a lot more quietly, is more powerful with a better sounding horn - but I digress.

Can anyone point me to a video, for this engine, on how to mount a traction tire.  That might ease my concerns about this engine.

What year was this released??

Thanks in advance - Ponz

Older MTH trucks were the same way. Not only a PITA for replacing tires, but sometimes the truck sides just come loose and the truck has to be removed to re-tighten the screws. Sure glad they re-designed, because now with newer truck sides, the screws can be removed from the bottom. Once the truck sides are removed, I use a chrome plated, 1/2" drive Master Mechanic, short ratchet extension, to install the tires. The main reason I use the extension, is to prevent over stretching of the tire, when installing it. The diameter of the extension is the same as the wheel. Also, the stretching the tire does experience, is equal throughout its whole diameter, instead of in one or two areas a tire experiences when stretched on traditionally. Just hold the extension tightly against the wheel and slide the tire on. Just make sure you use a chrome plated extension or the tire is harder slide.

Installing traction tires on GG1's, diesels and even some steamers is no big deal with this tool.  I have used it and made them for people and one train shop.  GG1's take size 18 tires.  Take a look at the attached video.  You do NOT have to take the side frames off the truck.  With practice, it will be easy.

Hi Bruce - I found your post/video prior to asking the question here.  The issue with the GG1 is that there isn't enough room between the wheel and side-frame to slip the tire through.
