Hello everyone, I hope I’m in the right forum for this question. Can somebody recommend a good train magazine that covers old trains and new trains? I would like to subscribe to one that I would get one deleivered every month. Thanks for your help. Mark

O Gauge Railroading

Well, before answering your question, we need to know what scale/gauge you model? Also, do you prefer printed magazines or will digital suffice? If you came here because you model O gauge / scale, you should know that no magazine applicable to that group publishes on a monthly schedule.

It sounds like your interest is in real trains. If you are interested in O Gauge models, you won't find a better magazine than this one.
If you are in fact looking for O Gauge trains, the part about every month is probably not do-able. Neither OGR or it's major competitor are printed 12 times a year. Several months are doubled up.
Yes mostly lionel and MTH O gauge. I do have a lot of LGB because that is what I first started collecting. I like magazines mailed to my house reading them on my hammock.
That’s kind of like walking into a restaurant and asking where is there a good place to eat! Go to the home page and click on subscribe.
Despite the fact O Gauge Railroading isn't a monthly publication, you still won't find a better magazine, much less a better bunch of people who love trains!
Note: There happens to be a publishing house that dates back to 1934 when it's founder started a magazine devoted to model railroading. It was followed in 1940 with the introduction of a prototype magazine about prototype trains. I'm not going to criticise this company other than say the quality of it's publications in my opinion have sadly declined in recent years. It appears I am not alone in my thinking either. I have noticed several long time customers who recently cancelled their subscriptions for almost the same reasons I did. In retrospect, I made the right decision to no longer support them.
One magazine in their family was devoted to outdoor trains in the garden. It went from a bi-monthly publication to quarterly. To make matters worse, the contents were severely reduced which also resulted in cancellations. Plainly said, the price they demanded for this magazine no longer made paying for it a worthwhile investment. In my opinion, there appears to be something seriously wrong with the internal affairs of this corporation. Will it survive? Only time will tell, but this may be just another sign of the times, as many publishers have either sold out or shut down altogether.
Item: The first prototype railroad orientated magazine began in the early part of the 20th Century and was known as Railroad Man's Magazine. It later became Railroad Magazine, surviving today as Railfan & Railroad. White River Productions purchased R&R along with Railroad Model Craftsman from Carstens Publications. Since then, WRP has added several additional railroad related magazines from other companies to their family, which were in danger of shutting down their businesses. In addition to magazines, WRP also publishes a wide range of top quality books on prototype as well as model railroads.
Not to forget, there are of course several other magazines in print, digital, or even online that are devoted to prototype and model trains. However, if it's O gauge you're seeking, then you've come to the right place! Please take a long look and then decide if you prefer to purchase a subscription to O Gauge Railroading in print form, digital, or perhaps even both. If you're anything like me, it will be the best investment you've made in 2020! While you're at it, consider signing up as a Supporting Member to insure that OGR will remain the very best publication on the market today, and in the future as well!
Testimony: I apologise to the entire OGR staff if it appears I've stepped out of line and "plugged" the magazine a wee bit too much, but I sincerely believe I speak for all my fellow modelers who feel just as I do. To quote a patriot from the founding years of the great nation known as the USofA: Together We Stand, Divided We Fall. At OGR it's much more than just a staff of professional model railroaders who put together such a quality publication that OGR has become what it is. It's also the wonderful modelers of all ages and gauges, who make up one of the finest families in this fantastic hobby. Indeed, I am extremely proud to be part of this family!
Thank you one and all,
