Trying to decide between a TMCC/Legacy Lionmaster Challenger...

TMCC was a lousy smoker. Had one. The Legacy has the smoking whistle which is terrific. I've got one, great engine!

I have a kinda dumb question guys...Is the Lionmaster challenger scale sized?

I've done quite a few of the old TMCC smoke units, and yes, they can really be made to smoke. I'm just leaning Legacy.

All the LionMaster line engines are smaller than scale. They occupy a space between full scale engines and the so-called traditional engines as far as size (although some traditional diesels are scale in size), and have more detail than traditional engines. They're designed for folks with modest-sized layouts, who still want all the bells and whistles, so to speak, and detail, but don't have the room to run the full scale stuff (which can be extremely large).

The current LionMaster models have all the top-of-the-line Legacy features, just like the full scale Legacy engines. They are many folks (including me) who wish Lionel would make more of them.

I’ve had the original issue LM Greyhound since it came out and it smokes good but not like a Legacy model. It’s plenty for me but I don’t usually have any smoke unit on no matter the engine. If the smoke is that big a deal then no question the Legacy.

I have a Lion Master Legacy Pennsy T-1 Duplex and I absolutely love it.   It smokes great, sounds great and has the whistle smoke as well.  I use it primarily with my K-Line 18" Broadway Limited smooth side passenger cars and the visual effect is very good.   My suggestion is go for the Lion master with Legacy.

Go with Legacy but don’t forget there are 2 versions whistle steam and non WS. The latter might be easier to find and cheaper.

As it's turning out, the Legacy version is a tad more difficult to find period. The fact no one wants to give them up has to account for something!!

Yes I agree - I have 2, both without the whistle smoke and they run and sound just brilliant!!  Hope you find one jeff

Go for the Legacy, I had the Greyhound whistle steam one, and it was very nice, but I moved over to MTH and sold it. Sadly it seems Lionmaster might be gone now. No Lionmasters in any of the 2017 catalogs. My gut feeling is that Lionchief Plus has taken it's place.

I didn't realize there were two Legacy versions, one with whistle smoke and one without. Good to know, thanks! I've got the Grey Whistle Smoke version, bought at York from Trainworld. Had my eye on them for a long time. Being it is the same paint scheme and cab # as the one I saw and sat in in North Platte, Nebraska, I couldn't say no. Beautiful engine!

I have the latest with whistle smoke.  One of the best locomotives I own.  Wish it had come in Clinchfield but UP is just fine. 

Gentlemen,

    I have been hoping that Lionel would come out with an LC+ Crescent 1925 of course, with all the Great Green, Gray and Silver Colors, and the fantastic Brass Piping.   They would sell like hot cakes!  Of Course the full size Legacy would be nice also.
