I have a number of locomotives with "KTM" gearboxes. What is the recommended type of lubricant? Reason I ask is that some of my gearboxes have brass intermediate gears, and some are "plastic/delrin" or similar. Some of the gearboxes use circular bronze bearings at each end of the worm shaft, and others use ball bearings. From an engineering point of view, mesh gearing needs a lubricant that is designed for EP or pressure applications, while ball bearings need a light oil. So if a gearbox has a "mix" of components, what is recommended? I am using lithium EP grease, and have used "gear oil", for the gearing and have prelubed the ball bearings with light oil, but of course the lubricant "circulates". So did the manufacturer ever recommend anything specific. What do you use.....? My experience has been that the "heavier oil" has a tendency to leak out of the case around the axle.....
