I am starting WEEKEND PHOTO FUN early this week.
This Sunday the Roanoke Valley Model Railroad Club will have an open house 1:00-4:00. We are located in the basement of the Virginia Museum of Transportation. The basement entrance is in the back of the museum pass the rocket.

The week before last, I picked up new track from the Standard Gauge Module Association. They purchased the tooling from USA Track. This track is replacing my Gargraves flex track I was using. The Gargraves track looked great but it was problematic for some of my engines.

The club has 7 layouts with a majority of members running on our N and HO layouts. It was a pleasant surprise that the club voted to get the more expensive multiple tie track option for the upgrade.

I spent about 3 hours taking out the old track including removing the old ballast.

Putting in the new track was challenging considering I had custom bent all the old track. I was concerned it wasn't going to fit right. As you can see the track curve doesn't quite match up with the old roadbed.

I was able to get the middle rail installed on our garden railway, on one of the wide radius loops. Running a Burlington Williams set of engines 3 rail now that we have the middle rail in with a set of CZ K-Line scale length passenger cars with scale 2 rail trucks. And on the outside loop a MTH CN powered engine and Atlas dummy I custom painted to CN running on the 2 rail scale loop. And a set of passenger cars I spent the day masking and painting today.  Live Steam engine running on the 1/8 scale railway.

Good job on the new track Scott looks good. Looking forward to everyone's photos this week.

Lots of pictures to show today.....1st from my recent NYC trip......the Number 6 subway yard in the northeast Bronx.....between the Westchester Square and Middletown Rd Stations......it was nice to see the MOW cars.....

In the distance you can see Lehman HS built over the Hutchinson River Pkwy (the orientation is looking south and the Bronx-Whitstone Bridge is about 2 miles beyond the school). When I was young, I worked with my uncle doing construction and we worked on the school. It gave me some of the impetus to construct a building "over the ROW".....

Just now received from Amazon the forklift I ordered for my American Freedom Train.  The AFT always carried a forklift on one of the flatcars to help move the train's wagons. This is not the correct forklift, but close.  However, there was a slight issue with the model.

The bulldozer is 1:50.  Good thing Amazon has an easy return policy.

Wow, Peter… you can go home again!!! Looks so familiar - My el’s were in Brooklyn, though in my day, you could park under them without fear of something falling off them and hitting me or my car.

Two weeks ago, I posted images of the Spruce Creek Bridge that I'm building on my layout. Two days later, I met my son out at the prototype to take some additional photos and take measurements to make the model as accurate as possible. The first three photos show the layout as it looked 20 minutes ago with a eastbound PPLX unit train lead by two Conrail SD-60-M's. Conrail reinforced these bridges in the 1980's with concrete pilasters and other work, and unlike the two other stone arch bridges on the layout, this model reflects those modifications.  The remaining photos are from our trip, and you can compare the partially finished model with the prototype:

Since last Sunday, I have been busy......

With consistent warm (hot) sunny weather, I finshed off two projects: The Korber sand house & tower and the TW TrainWorx New Haven style switch tower.

The Korber kit just needed sand. I used a piece of 5" foam to take up space in the bin. Spray painted it and add a sand veneer.

Both were a lot of fun to build.....

The water/soap/glue mixture was baked in my Honda Pilot for a day...after 30 minutes in 85 degree sun, the temp in the car was about 120 (118).....it beats drying over 3 days at room temperature.....

Now, for the switch tower......the TrainWorx kit was a bit more challenging.....

Bending and then holding down the roof tiles can be tough.....

This is where you really have to be patient......one stair tread takes about 15 minuts to set up......then you come back, again and again.....

Beautiful job on the tower, Peter. I think I would have either destroyed the kit or killed my self with those stairs!!! One question… I have a much less detailed TrainWorx kit to assemble later this year (a section of the Nicholson Viaduct) and the color of the real one resembles the color you used on the body of the building. Did it come that color or could you tell me how you achieved that color??? Thanks.

Working on an OGR kit, #825 Pedicini's Bakery. Painting, weathering, and assembly is complete. Next I need to work on window treatments, signage, and lighting. When completed, it will be an Italian grocer/deli.

50C3ACDD-B50A-4361-8477-CD3C04D2CAC7Peter showed an image of an example of why I enjoy scratchbuilding so much.

Most times it takes imagination and unusual ways to do things like hold things in place.  I've made models of all of my family's houses (6 total) and other structures and since they are custom made and designed, it's not like parts are available to buy anywhere - I had to figure out ways to make many many parts of the structures.  That's the fun part for me.  I've spent up to 2 weeks at times trying to find a way to make a component!!!!.  LOVE IT.

Finding ways to hold things in place while glue dries takes a lot of imagination at times, just like Peter shows.  Here's just 1 example ot using anything to get the job done (gluing on the roof wood):

So glad you are enjoying retirement.  I will be joining you at the end of 22, I’ve finally decided to retire.  I have set 4 dates so far and kept working each time but this time I will retire.  BTW, the best doctor I’ve ever had in my life was my nephrologist,  he unfortunately passed away several years ago and I still miss him.  I like you (probably) can build kits for quite a while from my own supply I’ve built up over the years.

My new to me LIONEL TMCC NP ABA set ran, this time with a proper lash-up courtesy of Les showing me how to install a new Engine ID #:

I regret I didn't video Murph's NP NCL consist of 10 passenger cars that included LIONEL, K-line, and custom painted cars that color-matched exceptionally well -- will have next week.  It make quite the train!
