After many years had passed since I last visited Roadside America, I had an opportunity to stop there this past weekend. I've always found seeing this layout very comforting as my family first took me when I was very young so many wonderful memories are associated with Roadside America for me. I'm very happy it's still here for us to enjoy as the display provides quite a peek into our hobby's past.

A 2015 Christmas Layout memory

As witnessed by the white surface, this area was originally scheduled to be a winter scene.  I decided to display the "family" cardboard houses, bought by Dad around 1950, instead of winter.  The horses are because there always seemed to be a corral with play horses, and usually cowboys, on the "family" Christmas layout.  The plastic church was bought by  Dad way back then too and always had an, ironically, "ungodly" fence around it

The plastic stuff I bought when I was, oh, maybe 7 or 8 so I displayed them too.

Before the trip to North Carolina to visit my daughter Amy and grand sons they spent the week here in the Memphis area visiting relatives. Here are a couple of pictures of us in the train room. Nolan is into his 4th year of "train training" and Oliver, the little guy had his first "train training" session during the July visit.

Thanks and have a great weekend. If you are down south, enjoy the heat, it's August  and it is supposed to  be hot!

I finally had a chance to compare the good, the bad, and the ugly  (I don't know which is which)

A simulated consist from the 2011 ... the AWT tender isn't correct, I'll guess I'll just have to build the 3-D printed version

The 2011 consist along with the 8444 from a 1988 consist when they painted the AWT black

and just the 3 Stooges

Great pictures Bob! What type of equipment do they normally operate?

Hi, Bobby.

Thanks for your compliment regarding my pictures. The vast majority of motive power and rolling stock on the layout is Lionel of the pre and post war eras; however, there were two passenger trains in operation, each of which was powered by a Williams Western Maryland scale FA-1. You can see one of these units at the head end of a consist of Lionel 2500 series aluminum cars in a few of the pictures. Also, one of the freights was powered a Lionel modern era starter type steam locomotive. I also noticed a few MPC U36B units as well but, again, most of the equipment is older.

Thanks for the return memories, Bob.

I was there when I was a kid in the 1950's, and I took my former wife there about 25 years ago & she loved it.  I'm almost 70 and I believe it is time for one more trip to enjoy the modeled Pa. scenery.  I noticed they have replaced most of the track with Gargraves (or Gargraves type) track.  Looks good.

Took a trip from downtown Chicago via Chicago river, Lake Michigan into the Calumet river to tour the Calumet industrial area. Saw lots of bridges and barge traffic. The trip was thru our PBS station WTTW and our guide was Geoffrey Baer. We had a great time. I wish I had a better camera these were done with my iPhone.

TTOS had their convention this week in Long Beach, right across the bridge from San Pedro. We were on the layout tour. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to take photos of the crowd (I was operating), but hopefully some of them are forum members and may chime in. We had about 50 people come through Wednesday evening. We went through several pots of coffee, about a case of water, about a half-case of soda and a whole lot of cookies. I'm going to see if I can finagle some photos from one of our members who took photos.
