It's winter outside but I'm sure it's summertime on a lot of our layouts! I have recently come to realize that I like running sets or consists with a specific theme or road name. Just recently I began working on piecing together a K-Line Coca Cola freight consist with a Coca Cola Auto Hauler car I bought on the For Sale/Trade forum the other day. A personal favorite set of mine is my MTH NS First Responders set with the Premier 5642 GP38-2 leading railking and premier safety train cars. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fb3pVoMAjbw (video was taken and uploaded by a friend of mine).

Let's see or hear about your favorite sets! What do you all have out there?

I operate scale lionel freight trains mostly...  seldom a passenger train...

I usually have themes for various trains that stay together usually and i just switch out power and matching cabooses.

My favorites are...

1) Fruit Train-  about 40 Lionel PFE steel sided reefers with several SFRD and few other reefers mixed in for color...  i pull with Big Boy, SP AC9, or ATSF Northern.

2) Western Freight-  about 40 lionel scale box cars all with roadnames from Chicago to the Pacific.  Mixture of 50ft AAR, double sheath, and PS1 box cars.  Predominantly all tuscan box cars with maybe one or two RED ones like GN added for interest.

At present don't have a layout. ( give me time just moved in last month. ) But lately prewar has caught my eye so if it will pull it all, I will have a 224E with a 2224W tender and 810 crane, 811 flat with logs, 812 gondola, 813 Cattle car, 814 automobile/furniture car, 814R refrigerator car, 815 tank car, 816 hopper, 820 dual flood-light car, & 817 caboose.

I'm mainly into Prewar & Post war now days, thou have modern stuff all the way up to a legacy NYC engine. I will run conventional and TMCC. I also have like 3 TPC - 300/400 and a couple of the power masters, so actually I can run all with a remote if I wish. I do not fore see 5 tracks even thou I have the track for it.

I just normally go nuts with the items I have, which can make for some very neat train consists. I like to...keep track of what I have, no pun intended.

This has to be the most detailed inventory of locomotives and rolling stock I have seen! I just keep track of mostly everything by memory and owners manuals in a binder.

Total Count: 68 Items, 97 Individual Engines & Rolling Stock.

This has to be the most detailed inventory of locomotives and rolling stock I have seen! I just keep track of mostly everything by memory and owners manuals in a binder.

Just wait until you see the even BIGGER list of items to hunt for in the future. Its faaar more detailed than just this

I like running postwar sets, specifically 1950-1954.  I have several includiing the Thunderbird, the 2211 WS w/681 Turbine plus others.  I like prewar, my favorite is the 250/252 in terra cotta and maroon (I have several) with matching 529 passenger cars.  My newest thrill is Lionel OO Gauge.  I have acquired two sets so far.

I started to do my list of train sets but it wouldn't work right on here, the program I use didn't like the format they have here. It was all mixed up. Okay got it to work, this is just my complete sets, I have more just engines not part of sets, and  passenger set, and then my freight, sets

For a while now I have been putting together Postwar Sets, one or two cars at a time. It really adds to the enjoyment and I can often put together a set more cheaply than buying the entire set at once. These are mostly freight sets and they all get run.

The latest is the "Gandy Dancer" set from '54.

I love collecting really old O gauge, ones that weren't meant to represent any real life engines in particular, but were just toys for the sake of being toys. Little short engines, pulling short trains of short cars. It's perfect. With little lights and bells around a layout filled with tinplate towers and lead-painted buildings. I would want nothing more in the world

Sets? Back in the MPC days I bought a lot of sets, I especially liked the top end Limited collector sets, but even the top traditional sets were nice. All that stuff is put away now.

When it comes to modern sets, there are a lot fewer. Again, I've stuck with only the top end freight sets, and lately Lionel hasn't done one every year. I see the BNSF tank car train in the new catalog. I'm debating getting that one, leaning toward yes. Typically, I just buy cars and engines  that I like "a la carte". For the most part, my tastes are beyond the set concept. Certainly nothing that would include track and transformer.

BTW, my definition of a set is any group of cars and an engine that came in a big box. The individual pieces may or may not have had their own smaller boxes inside. Anything else is just a train or grouping of cars and engines. Passenger trains are a little different, especially the way they're sold these days, with add ons the following year. I suppose they qualify in my book, if they were intended to go together, even if they weren't packaged in a big box.

I never have any rules.   I just run what i like to see, with no regards to a set, number of cars with the same number, how prototypical or number of rivets.

I am also pretty casual about it.  I have a string of scale passenger Atlas NYC passenger cars that I like to run behind one of my NYC locomotives, but that's as close as I come to anything I'd call a "set."  The PRR and RDG locomotives usually pull my scale freight cars.

When I run my PW locomotives, it's whatever nonscale cars happen to be handy at the time.

People may like the big legacy and premier stuff with long consists, but there is no shame in appreciating the little things.

I have recently taken an interest in boxed, VG+ or better condition Marx electric sets, plastic 8-wheel and/or deluxe with tilt couplers.

My own first train falls into that category (well, maybe just a little more used than that ), and I have started looking for more in the same vein.  I just bought a Big Rail set from 1970 that is Ex+--would be LN except that the lever for the switch is broken.

I have become very conscious of the play value of these kinds of things:  Marx sets of this variety tended to have some added feature:  uncoupler--even in the cheapest ones--a switch with a few extra pieces of track and a bumper, a building of some kind, telephone poles, an over/under trestle set, a handful of figures, even just an operating car with the trip.  Marx gave value for the dollar, and his stuff was usually clever.  It was always rugged.

As a break from the woes and travails of modern CC and rapacious costs, Marx has become a breath of fresh steam for me.

I'm a big fan of passenger cars.  Especially the late heavyweights and streamlined stuff.  I have a few sets.  Chicago & Northwestern, Norfolk & Southern, Orient Express all from MTH.  I'm still working on getting the appropriate engines to go with them.  I get most from train shows.  I'm looking for passenger sets from Illinois Central (Panama Limited or City of New Orleans) and Milwaukee Road Hiawatha.  I think that observation car is my favorite.  I have a few videos out on my youtube channel if you are interested.

HAVING GROWN UP ON A FARM IN WESTERN PA I GREW UP W/ PEENNSY, P AND L E ,ERIE , THE SOUTHERN, ALMOST ALL OF WHICH I RODE O AS A PAYING CUSTOMER AND A FEW TIMES ON THE CUFF  AS A BO WHEN I HAD TO GET SOMEPLACE  AND DIDN'T HAVE THE BEJAMINS FOR A TICKET. I COULD'T AFFORD, I  HAVE A HORROR STORY TO TELL ABOUT ONE FREE RIDE I CAGED ON A PEENNSY FREIGHTER I CAUGHT THAT ALMOST KILLED ME. AND  IF YOU'RE  INTERESTED ENOUGH TO LISTEN TO, YOU'LL HAVE  TO  CONTACT ME W/ A P M AND YOUR PHONE NO. AND A TIME OF DAY OR EVENING  THAT WORKS BEST FOR YOU CAUSE I TYPE LIKE OLD PEOPLE SCREW AND REFUSE TO SPEND HOURS TYPING WHICH KILLS MY BACK,  I HAVE ENGINES ETC AS A NOD TO MY HERITAGE, BUT SINCE I'VE LIVED IN THE WEST  SINCE 1964 I MODEL ALL THE MAJOR SOUTH AND S WESTERN LINES AND A FEW LONG SINCE BANKRUPT AND SHUT DOWN LIKE THE S A AND ARRANSAS PASS R R, THE EEL RIVER R R WHICH WAS FORMED TO HAUL HEAVY TIMBER  FRO N. CAL. TO SAN FRAN. AND THE TEXAS PACIFIC. SO IT;S UP TO YOU AND WE'LL SEE WHO I BRAVE ENOUGH TO GIVE OUT THEIR  PHONE NO. AND WHO ISN'T.

BTW, I JOINED WICKIPEDIA YRS. AGO WHEN I SAW A GLARING ERROR IN THEIR BLURB ABOUT HIESLER  ENGINES. . MY ADDITION WAS ONE I FOUND, OLD, NO LONGER RUNNING ,ON STATIC DISPLAY IN FRONT OF THE PACIFIC LMBR. CO. HDQTRS, IN SCOTIA CAL. SO I ADDED TO THE BLURB AND I'D BET THAT THERE MORE THAN ONE THEY DON'T KNOW ABOUT IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES WHERE THEY NEEDED A SUPERIOR ENG. FOR HAULING HEAVY LOADS AND COULD BE HAD FOR A SONG AND SHIPPING COSTS.
