Widely considered one of the most beautiful diesels ever produced, Alco's PA was a stunning locomotive. Found at the lead of some of America's most famous trains, the PA's unique lines and colorful paint schemes were a gift to the marketing, if not always the operating departments. Lionel is pleased to bring these beauties back to your layout with exciting new features. Available as AA sets with both units powered and equipped with LEGACY® and Bluetooth® for the first time, you can expand your consist and make it sound as good as it looks with an additional SuperBass PB! Where appropriate, models also feature simulated stainless steel finishes and Mars lights.

Both units powered!

  • LEGACY® Control System equipped – able to run in LEGACY® Control mode, in TrainMaster® Command Control mode, or in Conventional mode with a standard transformer
  • Bluetooth® Control - Operate with Universal Remote or LionChief® App
  • LEGACY® and Bluetooth® control in both locomotives
  • Fan-driven smoke in both locomotives
  • Track IR in lead locomotive
  • Front ElectroCouplers and non-operating rear couplers on both locomotives

  • LEGACY® "Real-Time Quilling Horn" control with instant response for realistic signature "quilling" and correctly timed warning signals

What is a black bonnet?   Is it a prototypical scheme?

The silver paint on the prototypes when viewed at certain angles appeared blackish.

When Lionel first cataloged the 2333 in 1948, they were viewing one of these photographs and thought that the silver was actually black and cataloged units as red and black rather than red and silver; hence, black bonnets.

You gotta be joking.  There was NEVER any black bonnets.

There were no Coors Light trains or 49er Challengers but that never stopped the manufacturers before.

Personally I think it's  fun that Pat and others are thinking outside the box. It's not for everyone but what is?

Hello Pat and WBC. Pat, thanks for your enthusiasm towards special runs and WBC thanks for the history lesson. I would be 100% in for a set of Black Bonnet F3s, but I’ve never liked the Alcos. Another thought is the whiskers freight scheme. It hasn’t been overdone in Legacy. In fact, used prices for the sole run of Legacy ATSF whiskers are north of MSRP.

Would rather a DRGW PA set in first silver/aspen gold scheme...

...and believe me, I had to swallow hard to voice this preference, since I'm more an ATSF fan.   (Wife is into DRGW!)

Would be a lot easier to do (probably resulting in a lower price, too.....right?), definitely of a prototypical/historical significance, and a true complement to the Atlas California Zephyr cars (as in the above image).

So, what's to follow?...a special run of 21" passenger cars in the complementary Black Bonnet scheme???  After all....

KD

I was surprised to see Lionel has this scheme listed in the 2018 Volume 2 catalog.
