OK, Can it be done?  Has anyone tried it?   Using Williams FM pilots, and side frames

on the Lionel FM power truck?   Or the reverse for that matter?  Lionel pilots and

side frames on the Williams FM power truck?  I've swapped Lionel FM truck parts

onto the MTH FM truck with good success.  Little bit of work required, but not hard.

Thinking of converting an older PW Lionel FM to Williams trucks and can motors.

Will keep PW horn, otherwise I'd swap the whole chassis.  Thanks !!

From what I know about post-war Lionel train and Williams (pre-Bachmann) trains, although they might be similar, the motor assemblies and attaqchment for the motors is very differant. You might be able to use the Williams reverse board in place of the Lionel reverse unit, but not sure about being able to use other parts between the two.

True Blast 2 by Williams & WBB can be added to most Lionel units, it is mainly an issue of will it fit inside the Lionel shell.

The Williams conversion set comes with 2 motors and trucks, minus pilots and

side frames. It also has the DC reverse/rectifier board.  Will keep the PW

Lionel chassis to use the PW battery horn set-up.  Looking like the wheel

swap to fix the excess wobble will be too expensive, and or not available.

Now I just need to find a real zinc die cast fuel tank to replace the cast

pewter job that the chooch came with.  Pewter will NOT hold screw threads!

That is basically what I am trying to get at, Lionel has a large opening and attaches or used to attach with spring loaded fixtures to the frame.

Williams has a rather small opening and is slotted with the motor/truck assembly sort of gliding over part of the frame.

The only problem with modifying the frame on a Williams or Lionel engine is that it will be permanant.

It would be easier to swap out the shells of the two engines and drill holes in the frame.

I have done this with kitbashed F3's. The Lionel keyhole in the frame is a little bigger than the WBB truck and it does cause some wobble and slop but will work. The bolsters, couplers, etc. I went with WBB as it would have been to much to fab the Lionel stuff to it. I'm still trying to figure a way to tighten it up, and comming up empty. If anybody has ideas, i'm open. Good luck

Here's a new idea for you.

I had a WILLIAMS FM that wobbled going down the track, I tried everything.

Then I got the bright idea to try another WILLIA MS  truck and motor combo, it cured the wobble. Then I decided to experiment.I took another WILLIAMS frame and mounted a dummy truck to one engine hole and put the bad one in the remaining hole.

Then I saw what looked like the problem, the motor was loose on the truck, so what to do?  Finally I changed for a shorter screw to mount the truck and I installed a LIONEL grounding spring between the motor and frame. Don't ask me how, but the problem was cured. I removed the dummy truck and installed a spare motor and powered truck in the hole the exact same way using the shorter screw and LIONEL grounding spring.

When I traded it for another engine it was one of the best running pair I had, someone is running that setup and may not know it as WILLIAMS engines have one bad fault, they seem to run forever without service, ain't that a shame??.

Remember this solution is free and may or may not work for you, but I had a lot of fun fixing the problem. WILLIAMS engines are in my price range.

Long as the holes more or less line up for the sideframes and pilots, and the

vertical spacing is correct...we are GTG.  I can lose the slop if the keyhole

is a bit big on the Lionel frame; no problem.  In the mean time, the killer DL&W

2321 lid is now sitting atop a Custom Trains Sam. chassis from 1993.  So I got a

pretty good idea of how awesome this puppy is gonna run....Magnifico!!!!
