I recently purchased a Lionel animated windmill and I don't like part of the color scheme.

The vanes are white plastic and the platform is black plastic embossed to look like wood planks. Black wood?

I'll probably paint the platform a shade of brown to look more like wood, but not sure about the vanes. Some windmills have metal blades.

I thought the vanes might look better painted a metal color (aluminum, etc). Perhaps making them look rusted is appropriate, but I have yet to master "rusting" to look real.

Bill, This is how I painted mine. The problem I think I am having is the weight of the paint on the blades keeps it from operating well. Of course these vibrating types are hard to operate anyway. I plan to motorize it at some point.

Turtle2, thanks. I see you chose to make the vanes wooden. Looks good. I will have to decide whether to go with wood vanes or metal.

Having seen a number of these growing up in rural western Colorado, I'd say the metal blades are more typical but I'm not as old as that Consolidation you show

I painted everything by hand. My skills with the air brush are poor.
