So I bought a ZW L for my layout to replace the ZW C with the bricks due to the L having the volt and amp meters and 200 speed steps along with really liking the looks.

Well 3 weeks in to using it the D channel went out and would not put out more than 15 volts for a short burst and usually hovered around 11.5 volts regardless of the amp load, in my layout either 2.5 or 5 amps depending on the track. The L would suddenly not run a open frame motor tinplate engine and the volt meter background lighting would dim and brighten. Did this even disconnected from the layout and still acted the same.

Called Lionel and they took care of me so off it went today. Good thing I have not completely removed the ZW C bricks from underneath the layout. I must admit I am really disappointed that another Lionel product I have bought is defective but nothing I can do now.

So, has anyone else had a failure of the ZW L? What was the failure, in known, and what was the eventual fix/solution?

Please do not bash Lionel, overseas manufacturing, quality control, or inject politics into this thread. I am simply curious to see if there are any common issues of if I am just continuing my "normal luck."

You're the first I read who has reported a defect. I found 2 bugs with the transformer when running certain engines. Lionel has been great working on a solution. Other than the bugs, I have found it to be a solid performer. These are heavy units and something may have happened in shipping. I plan to add a second one for all my accessories.

Jeff, I believe you are the first with a real problem.  I would imagine Jon wants to check it out as these things have been rock solid so far.  Built with quality components and beta tested thoroughly.  I know, I know, but Jon posted he's looking into the max amp/handle setting and Pulmore situation.

Mine has worked flawlessly.  I imagine you'll get a replacement but I'd like to know what they find.

I apologize for that is not my intent and I welcome your input on what would be an appropiate title.

You might try something like "ZW-L Issues:  What Have You Encountered?".  You can substitute the word "failure" or "problem" for the word "issues" in my proposed title -- depending on how severe an issue you'd want folks to chime in on.  But I agree with Marty that the word "defects" conjures up something that is more of a systemic problem with the product, which hasn't been the case from all the glowing reports we've read here.

Another title might be “My defective ZL-W” or perhaps  “Has anyone else encountered  a defective ZL-W?” Either would be a correct for your purpose and situation since one  acceptable meaning of defective is: “having a problem or fault that prevents something from working correctly” and your ZW-L is not working correctly.
