This is information about why these Berkshires were built and not done build to order. Lionel took too many pre-orders for the recent release of the Polar Gold, Black and NKP Berkshires and was not able to fill the orders they took. So in a nut shell they had to do a run of 300 pieces but only needed 40-50 units to fulfill the back orders. They came up with the idea to do a limited 115th Anniv. Silver Plated Berkshires which I think was a good business move on their part. These engines will sell out fast and dealers only have a small number to sell. I hope this answers some of the questions you all have. Thanks for reading my babble.

Happy Railroading

Pat

Pat,

Thank you very much.  Makes sense, and a good business move by Lionel for the excess inventory they had to created to fulfill the original BTO numbers.

Every company can miss the projected target, mine included, now and then.

Lionel's contracted factory required a minimum run that was above the number Lionel needed.   I like the move they made this move to cut their losses for selfish reasons:  I ordered one of these Anniversary locos from my shop.

Two messages here. Good for Lionel to fill orders for the black version of the Berkshire. I am sure those who ordered this one are very happy about this. Also, a very smart business decision to fill the production run with a 115h Anniversary Edition.

Lionel and it's customers are winners here.

+1, absolutely!

The hobbyist and Lionel both benefited from their decision.  I think they made a great move.

This engine is a beautiful piece of art. It is intended for the collector market and will appeal to some and some Will hate it. I for one love it and I can tell you these will be hard to acquire . All you have to do is the math, 600 plus Lionel Dealers and only 250 pieces to go around.

Thanks

Word on the street is the silver Berks were used to meet Lionel's "minimum production run", when another run of PE Berks was needed to "make good" on whatever mix-up occurred last year with Charlie Ro's dealer order with Lionel.

At the end of the day, it seems to be a win-win situation for everybody involved.  Charlie's customers who pre-ordered a PE Berk but didn't get one late last year will finally get theirs now.  And by filling out the minimum production run, Lionel can parlay a limited number of silver Berks for its 115th Anniversary celebration.

Sounds good anyway.

Were it not a special anniversary year for Lionel... With all the excitement surrounding steam excursions these days, Lionel probably could have easily sold a bunch more 765 Nickel Plate Road Berks.    But from what I heard, the balance of Berks in this production run will be the Silver 115th Anniversary Berk.

Of course the other option here is Lionel could offer a "surprise" offering of limited Berks out of this production run whose availability would coincide with Lionel's Vol 2 catalog due out on September 4th.  Now that BTO is the norm,  I can't recall when Lionel last offered immediate availability of a catalog'd locomotive.  Perhaps 2012... when the "Giants" were catalog'd in a variety of road-names?
