Dehumidifier Recall

Why can you NOT mention brand names in this post?

 

We had a Kenmore machine from 2004 which was on the recall list. Made by LG for Sears. We did receive notification from Sears about the recall. My machine seemed to work ok, did not get hot. However we did eventually take advantage of the recall offer and  Purchased a Friedrich machine which seems to work better than the Kenmore did . Use the first link and search dehumidifier and a list of recalls for these will come up. You can check to see if the machine you own is on the lists. Note that the Kenmore we had which was on the list was for machines manufactured over a specific time period and did not include all Kenmores .

One of the dehumidifier recalls is huge - 2.5M units sold in US alone.  The dehumidifiers were made in China over a range of years by Gree and sold in the US under 12 different brands (multiple models/sizes within brand).  Go to the CPSC site and check for your brand and model to see if it is on the list.

Whereas we have a SoleusAir from Menards, after checking this site and comparing the tag information, our dehumidifier is not affected by the recall.

If you scroll down the page, you'll see the various brands affected.  You can click on the brand you might have, and it will bring up detail info on affected models.

 

Still not sure?...   At the bottom of the page is a place where you can enter the tag info from your specific model, and they will immediately tell you whether your machine is in the affected group.

 

This scared the morning poop right out of me when I first read about it on the forum!  The dehumidifier sits in the middle of the basement, the middle of the entire layout and EVERYTHING trains.  Then, thinking about the times we'd leave the house for an extended time.......  And having a smoke detector link to our security service is small consolation, when you think about it.  I generally unplug a lot of items when we go away for an extended time, but keeping the basement dry?....I've always trusted the dehumidifier....with a UL on the label!!!

I had one that was under this recall. I sent in the sticker, as per the instructions, then waited six months and had forgot about it. When it came time for a dehumidifier again, I remembered and called to find out what's going on. Turns out that you have to send in the last few inches of the cord, along with the plug. After I did that, they sent a check in about 6-8 weeks.

I had a dehumidifier that was subject to that recall as well. It was a bit frustrating, and took a while to complete the process (including sending in the plug and label from the machine), but eventually they sent a check for the full cost of the machine.

I also had a unit that was recalled.  Anyone that has a dehumidifier running in their home should take a look and make sure their unit is safe.

I just received my mailing packet to return the unit's power cord.  The telephone approach for info was useless, but it was not that hard to complete the online request form, but I could not find any info as to what amount the company is sending for a replacement purchase.  Are they basing the refund on your recalled unit's original MSRP or some other amount?

I had just looked at my dehumidifier and it too is defective.  I filled out the online recall check list and it came up defective. 

 

Question, What is a good brand to buy? Model?

Thanks, bigtruckpete, for posting this note.  I had seen it before, but since then I have bought a new dehumidifier, so it's time to check the model # on the new one. I appreciate the reminder.
