as a young boy of ten or so, i can remember the long trains of flatbed cars with tanks, cannon, airplanes going down the burlington line. I have a couple of Corsair models 1:43 that would be perfect to put on a flatbed, but the flatbeds of those days were lower?? which direction does on go to find that era?

To me, some of the Weavers get close to this style.
Check out some of the old engineering drawings of the flats. The deck height was 3'8"-3'10" with a 1' clearance from the underframe to the railhead.
For what it's worth, in the railroad/train world they are called "flatcars". The trucking industry has "flatbeds".
