I have a Lionel Southern Pacific AC-9 2-8-8-4 w/Odyssey. It has long been my favorite engine, but it has developed a problem. I run both TMCC and Legacy, and when I attempt to power up the engine, it takes off like a bullet with spinning tires going full boar, etc. I have to hit the halt button or turn the power lever down to save the engine from launching into space.

The engine has done this on occasion in the past but usually shutting down power and starting again fixes the issue. Now, however, I can't seem to break the cycle. The Odyssey switch is off (as I have always run it this way). I have tried reprogramming it and the problem persists in both TMCC and Legacy mode.

I just ran down to check whether it functions conventionally. It powers up but does not move- that can't be good!

Nothing out of the ordinary happened to the locomotive recently. I admit I am not an expert with the whole Odyssey feature. It truly is my favorite engine and I hope this is a problem that others have dealt with successfully.

Thanks in advance for ANY advice on correcting the issue.

It's possible that something is wrong with the tachometer reader on the flywheel of the motor. Some are magnetic, some have little slots for the LED to shine through, and some have stripes.

If you can take the boiler off and look at the flywheel, you should find the problem.

If that doesn't do it, follow the wires from the tach reader on the flywheel to where they plug into a board and see of one is broken, or the plug came loose.

You could have as many as six things that will give you problems. I would suspect the motor driver or the motor encoder is the culprit. If its one of these I would replace it with a ERR Cruise Commander "M" wireles tether. The "M" is not hard to replace. We are located in Norwalk Ohio and can assist you in your repair.

Bill,

I am located in Swanton, Ohio. I believe we are only about 30-50 miles apart. How would I go about bringing it to you for repair? Do I need an appointment? What is your address?

This is good news for me because I did not want to incur shipping cost on such a large engine (actually, I may have several that require some attention).

Thank your for responding!
