Received the following e-mailed information on Hump Yards still in service.

Thought there might be some interest  on this forum.

 

Current hump yards in North America

The following are:
1. Active yards. Most are large with 30 or more tracks, but the mini humps have less than 20.
2. Have high profile humps (around 15' - 25'). Yards equipped with Dowty retarders usually have lower profile humps. Mini humps also have lower profile humps.
3. Have automated retarders (usually one main retarder and then group retarders) or Dowty retarders. Mini humps usually have only a master retarder OR have retarders on one rail instead of both.
4. Are "network" yards, meaning they build trains for each respective railroad's entire system and not for an individual industry. All the following are used for the classification of loose carload freight.

The Alton & Southern, in E. St. Louis, IL  is a double hump as they can and almost always have two humpers shoving cuts over the hump. They usually use a pair of UP SD40s as hump sets. They handle just about all UP traffic and a few off the NS and CSX.

The Terminal Railroad in nearby Madison IL has a single hump and much smaller yard. They also use SD40s to shove the hump. They handle mostly BNSF and CSX traffic with some NS and the CN(IC) local out of Centralia IL.

I grew up next to the now BNSF hump yard in Pasco, WA, it is still a very active , single hump yard. I spent many an afternoon watching after biked out 4th street and walking to the side where tower and hump were, back then you could access the yard if you were friendly, now you get chased off if even park too long.
