This is my first "modern" engine. Everything else I have is postwar. Since the 773 is so pricey, I picked this 783 up at auction pretty cheap. The smoke unit resistor was kaput and it has the armature moving back against the brush plate issue which looks like it has had for quite some time. The outside of the loco is like new and the sound of steam (yuk) works.

Along with a standard lube up I fixed the puffer unit by modifying one of the post war smoke elements I make. There's a lot of smoke leakage around the plastic piston. Is that normal and is this about the most I can expect from this type of puffer? I'm using megasteam in the vid. I was thinking of a fan driven unit as a replacement. Is there a way to make it chuff?  Does anybody have a recommendation as to which part # would work with a 80s hudson

Thanks!

I have one, remember there is a smoke manifold where some smoke will come out from down around the steam chest. Is it there? Here's the link to the Lionel exploded parts diagram for the 783, 785...:

Try Jeff Kane at The Train Tender he might have parts if you need them..

The SOS, Sounds of Steam, units did sound horrible and most people will be surprised that it still works. Mine has a ERR RS board in it.

Hope this helps.
