Amen to that. My son was supposed to be in Bahrain right now but plans got changed. I feel real blessed to have him home this Christmas.

You are Joe, and both you and I are grateful for it.

In the Vietnam era when I served, I got leave my first Christmas.  Iwas able to get a ride to the Atlanta airport from Savannah.  Because of all the military installations that airport served, it was a sea of green with Marines to boot.  We were all flying standby, couldn't get out, stayed overnight, all flights booked, was lucky to get out around 5 AM.  I had come to think that my Christmas leave was going to be spent in the airport.

My second year overseas, I had this 1970 Lionel catalog unfolded pinned to the wall, over my bed in the hooch.

It was the closest I could get to home.

I ended up on one of those radio broadcasts saying, "Hi" to those back home.  I couldn't believe how many of my friends got up very early Christmas morning to hear my voice.  I was very humbled by that.

Merry Christmas to all our military personal, we do care.  For those of you overseas, a special wish for you and yours.

The point of my story above is to say that time goes on and whatever the sacrifice, you will get through.

For the Proud Parents of our OGR Military Members,

To all of you who's children are deployed in the military for the safety of our nation, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts, your families make it possible for every US citizen to live in the freedom and security that we all enjoy, especially at Christmas time. Those of us who have already been thru the mill, never forget what it takes for our country to remain free, it truly is the most expensive commodity on God's earth.  We are grateful for the way you raised your children, and the incredible people they have become.  May the Supreme Architect watch over your families now and for ever more.  God Bless you all.

PCRR/Dave

I well remember my first Christmas in the Corps. Man it was so very different from anything I had ever experienced before, but what humbled me the most was speaking to those that served in combat in places whose names I cannot even begin to pronounce.

Yes, I am a veteran, but not a veteran of war(s). So many of our vets are and I have nothing but the absolute greatest respect and admiration for anyone that puts on a uniform and goes off to some foreign land and defends the defenseless. Nothing even remotely comes close to the sacrifice these brave men and women have made.

Just today, in the train store, I met a WWII combat decorated Airborne Ranger. He and his brother both were sent to the Pacific theatre to fight the Japanese. His brother, he told me, was killed in action over on Iwo Jima. When he said this, he started to cry and then I lost it as well. I took his hand and said, I thank you and your brother for serving our great nation and as long as I have breath in me, I will NEVER EVER forget what you and your brother did. Word for word!

It was, a touching scene.

I applaud and thank all veterans past. present and future that serve this great nation and defend those that cannot defend themselves.

GOD BLESS them all.

Pete

P.S. Nothing brings people together better then trains.

God bless those who are serving now and especially the troops who will be far from home during this special time of the year. And to our wounded wariers and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, we will never forget you.

Richard

Great photo of you and M151-A2 with trailer.  Where was that photo taken?  Most M151's did not have camo paint.  Thanks for your service and other forum members also.

I spent 3 Christmas mornings away from home and it was no fun being so far away from family and friends.  This is why our wishes are so important.  Thanks to all forum members who have served.

Tex,

That picture was at Wiley Barracks in Neu Ulm, Germany in 1980 or 81. I was a Commo Platoon leader in a Pershing Missile firing battery - A Battery 1st Battalion 81st Field Artillery. (Pershing)

All of the army vehicles and tracks were painted in the woodland camouflage scheme. back in those day. Remember, the cold war was on, and everything we trained for was for a conflict with the USSR.

Thanks,

Richard

Like your post Train Yard.  I spent three Christmas away from home 1 state side and 2 on Okinawa with the Air Force.  I'm very proud to be a veteran but the combat veteran's and the ones that didn't make it home are the hero's.  My father was at the Battle of the Bulge and wouldn't let me join the Army or the Marine Corp because he about starved and froze to death so I wouldn't have to. God all the Combat Vets, Wounded Warriors and the MIA'S. We will never forget.

Richard, I remember the cold war well, I was on a nuclear submarine spending much of our time on intel patrols in and around Soviet waters.  We also made 3 special ops missions to North and South Vietnam.  Thanks for your service.
