I caught a glimpse of the 2014 MTH club car last night, the DM&IR Ore Car:

MTH Club Car 2014

The catalog image doesn't do the car justice.  The car is painted gold (not mustard yellow) and heralds the 50th anniversary of the DM&IR in 1974.

I wasn't in a position to get a picture, but if it's from the Fantasy Island car shops, it's a nice looking car.  There is an air of truth about it.

Now, I've scoured the internet, checked the 1974 issues of Trains magazine and even the Missabe Road Historical Society.  I haven't been able to locate a prototype photo or any information if an ore car was painted this way.

I find it hard to believe such a car would have escaped a photographer and model train manufactures for 40 years.  You would think it would've been a stand-out in the sea of oxide red ore cars in DM&IR-land.

It is a puzzlement.

Hi Rusty,

Yes I have to agree with you about this years MTH Club Car. I received mine Yesterday and was very amazed when I opened the box to see the beautiful gold colored car. I had to open it up just to satisfy my eyes to believe what I was looking at. This car will really stand out with my other consists of SHS Ore cars I have of the same road. Now I wished I had purchased a 6 car set but I don't have the money now.

     Take care and Happy Railroading.

Don

I can post a picture. But after the death of my digicam, I had to use the cell phone. So for what it's worth, posing on a section of ancient fiber tie track, with my new camo battle pajamas I bought at Farm and Fleet this afternoon as backdrop.
