Hello all. I bought my son an MTH O guage Harley Davidson train 5 years ago. It worked flawless until we put it away for almost a year. A few months back he wanted to put it all back up and start his first layout. We put it together but it didnt seem as smooth running as usual. It used to run very smooth even at a very slow speed unlike his old lionel polar express train that would not operate great unless at 1/2 throttle or more.

The MTH was now running similar to the Polar Express. The smoke still worked but the sound was gargled...especially the bell and whistle. The sound would dim also. I put it away after that but now I'd like to research and try to fix it. It looked like everything pointed to the battery so i replaced it and let it charge for about 10 hours on the track. Now the sound doesn't work at all. No protosounds, chuff, whistle etc.

I next suspected the speaker so i removed it and hooked it up to a headphone jack and it works. I'm now at a loss as to which direction to head from here. Does anyone have any ideas at all? Any help is appreciated!!

Do a factory reset with DCS.  If running conventional do a feature reset by signaling 1W and 5B rapidly iaw the instructions.  You will hear 2 toot acknowledgement if successful.

Make sure the volume knob is on full.  Cycle it.

Since this is a 3V board it should not have just failed like that, but the board is testable and repairable if it did.  G

I appreciate the suggestions everyone. Replacing the battery was the first thing i did. I was just hoping I could have figured this out easily since I have all the tools etc. I am into RC Helicopters so I thought I could save money on repairs. I'm just worried it will be so expensive that I'd be better off buying a used train set for my son to replace this one.
