I'm the same as I really despise summer! I'll take the cold & snow any day over hot & sticky

Count me in as another one who isn't sad to see the heat and humidity of summer go.  Looks like we're in for a couple of days of roasting summer weather here in the northeast, but I'm hoping this will be the last of it, and we can get into some nice, clear, crisp autumn days at last.

Which makes me wonder -- how many folks have dedicated at least part of their layouts to autumn scenery?

While the time I allow myself to start into Christmas mode has increasingly crept earlier each year, I hope it's never THIS early.  I don't want to start so early that I'm tired of the whole holiday before Thanksgiving.  With as special as Christmas is, it's tempting to start getting into the spirit earlier and earlier, but it can be too much of a good thing.  Trains are a Christmas-time only hobby for me so normally I don't even visit this forum until I'm starting to think about Christmas.  Which makes me wonder why I'm on it this early in the year!  Not good, not good.

The only thing I do try to do about now is to start thinking about things I may need for the upcoming Christmas layout.  What I didn't have last year, what frustrated me about the layout, etc.  Good time to stock up on things so they are ready to go.  It's also a good time to snag deals on various Christmas cars, engines, village houses, etc when fewer buyers are looking for those things right now.  Come Dec 1, prices are sky high.

Guys,

As we begin the final weekend officially of summer, let me say that this has not been a fun summer for me with my Dad in a nursing home.I visit every day and cheer him up, he has finally gotten over his depression. I am glad the summer is over even though I didn't go in the pool due to a recent back strain injury. I am now looking forward to celebrating Halloween and that Joyous of holidays Christmas when I get to be a kid again at the Annual Holiday Train Show at Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Sad to say summertime is over for me, been too busy to enjoy it! Hope it was great for all of you. Resurrecting this thread has been fun!

Mike, Hope life improves for you.

Sorry to hear you dad is unhappy in a home, that's never pleasant it seems.

Try to get him involved socially and making friends there, it can't hurt.

My summer was decent, I have a new Grand daughter this year and she lights up my life. In point, We just spent 4 days camping up north. She was amazed by the experiences there. Wild Ducks landing in the river and hanging around for food, Sleeping in a tent, ect.

Mike I know it's difficult having a parent in any institution. When Dad was in hospice I always wanted to sneak an O27 circle into him. There was something about watching the train go round and round that made Dad forget about anything else that may have been bothering him. Never did get that O27 loop into his room. But he came home for  his last days. He and Theodore had a great time together.

Hoping for the best for your Dad and family, From one caregiver to another brother .

Dear Russell and Mathew,

You guys are the BEST, thank you for trying to cheer me up.....you did!!!! I know it must be hard for my Dad to accept things as they are being that he was a pilot and was very active in his life at home. The most difficult thing he had to give up was his car!

Thank you for giving me an idea though a loop of track on an oval table might just do the trick!!!

Mike Maurice
