We were just wondering, before we invested any funds, if we upgraded LIONEL STEAMERS from the 50's & 60's would there be anyone that would purchase these units.

Features such as electronic E units and L.E.D. lighting upgrades.

Tell us what your thoughts are on this subject.

Pappy,

You are correct in your thinking.

We are thinking about perhaps a #242 and upgrading with new paint and markings, new grab irons, RED & GREEN LED marker lights, LED headlight, directional LED reverse light, electronic E unit. Maybe even adding electrical pick ups on the tender with a tether between the engine & tender for better operating.

The price for one of these would be around $175.00 which would include shipping in CONUS.

If anything, I would want a kit that would allow me to upgrade MY engine easily, and reversibly. It would need to have the following features:

  • Conventional Operation of electronic Whistle, Bell
  • Conventional Operation of Direction Control (electronic e-unit)
  • Direct fit Warm-White LED Bulb (Say E10 screw base)
  • No tether to tender (but a two part kit, one for loco, one for tender would be interesting)
  • I would not be opposed to optional Legacy/DCS operation modes.

I would not be interested buying a pre-upgraded locomotive, especially a plastic 242, and especially at $175. However, a service where I send my engine in for upgrading would be welcome.

Looks like other people have the same misunderstanding I have. Maybe there's a misunderstanding in what the question should have been.....

My Friend,

bigo426, I did not mock or ridicule you in any way . If you construed it as saying such, I'm sorry. At that point it became a interpretation issue . I wanted the OP to see the error in wording....THAT'S ALL, PURE AND SIMPLE .

I personally would want to upgrade myself, so a kit would be nice. Maybe a sound system that only has chuffing, bell, and crew talk--no electronic whistle. That way people could hook up the original postwar whistle to have that classic sound! I would buy that system and put it in my 736 berkshire in a heartbeat!

The stuff you're proposing I could probably do myself.

What I really want is a lower gear ratio, and maybe a 5-pole armature.  Basically enough speed control that you could turn the loco on and let it run without fear of it leaving the table.  Diesels run ok, but most postwar steam locos have very poor speed control.  A look at the number of broken marker lights, bent cowcatcher steps and cab roofs seen at train shows bears me out.

This kind of upgrade would take some original engineering, probably a whole new chassis (or at least re-drilled side plates with added gears and gear studs, etc.)

I keep waiting for Neil Young to influence Lionel to produce a 2018 replica with Legacy.  We can hope!  -Ted
